I'm installing a bunch of these lights in my cabin where lights did not previously exist. The ceiling has 2x4 rafters and R13 insulation. I know the lights themselves are IC rated, but the question I have is do I need to cut out a section of insulation for the box, or can the box just sit on top of the light when installed?

I believe the requirement is only that the box needs to be securely fastened to the framing. Where it lives within reach for the pigtail to light is up to you. It should be serviceable for the hole for the fixture, so above the fixture would be fine.

This would most likely mean attaching it to the underside of the roof decking.

Unless you're getting it inspected, do whatever you want. I doubt it will hurt anything by being lose in the cavity and sitting on the wafer.

No inspections. Just don't want to burn it down and I'm new to these type of lights.

You won't they generate very little heat. Just make sure you wore them in correctly.

I wouldn't have the box just sitting on top the light.. that means your wires aren't secured to anything. You have access above the ceiling right? Just secure them.

I just installed 20 of these led cans in my basement. I used these

and then mounted the boxes to rafters through this hole, ensuring that if I ever need to replace one, I'm able to.
make sure you use RC50s in the knock outs so your wires don't rub. I used needle nose to pull out the little tab in the middle, since my wires were all secured with staples within 12" of the box.
