I have a livestock barn that is not being used and full of fantastic dimensional members 2x4x8', 2x8x8' and 2x10x10'. I'm at that point where I have to either A.) put money into the barn to keep it standing and put it to use or B.) harvest and sell the lumber. Does anyone have any experience or idea on how to supply retail lumber yards with reclaimed products? If I had to guess, I have about 2,000 sf or 1,200 board feet (rough estimate).

Do you know what species?
That will be the driving factor in determining value.

Where is it located?

I seriously doubt a lumberyard would be interested in it. Your best bet is private sale

This right here, and most interested parties will want you to give it to them for free. You might reach out to interior designers who like to do "rustic" stuff.

If you have pictures of it, I would be interested in buying it. I've been looking for some old barn wood to line the inside of my shop. Only bad thing is I live in the Houston area. We'd have to figure out how to get hauled down from the Panhandle.

Jeremy on this site used to work with lumber like that. Not sure if he is still around.

That will be your next problem, it's in BFE.

If you have a hand plane, take some of the rough flat side off, then splash it with water and take a pic. It's either oak or pine.

Scratch it with your fingernail. If it leaves a scratch it's probably pine, if it doesn't it's probably some flavor of white oak

If it's pine, it's probably not worth the cost to dismantle it. Most reclaimers only want hardwoods or cypress/hemlock. If it's virgin, old growth pine with square nail holes and non-circular saw marks you may be able to find a buyer though

Google the bigger cities in the area for a person that sells reclaimed wood.

There's a place here in San Antonio that does this, but I'm sure its too far.

When would you need it? I have family down there that could justify the trip, but it may take a minute.

Using the fingernail trick it may be pine. Not a premium member. Got an email that I can send these to?

Your local lumberyard might post photos of all that "as is" and "bring hammer, come get some" for their regular customers, as sometimes a custom homeowner will ask for cabinets, built-beams, etc. for that look, if not architects that have reclaimed old bridges, etc. for the rustic beams.
You could just sit and check them out with cash & carry.

NextDoor.com is in your area & posts photos for you - has well served Aggieland in such items, less so has Facebook Marketplace. Reclaimed Lumber is not in your area but maybe a lumber wholeseller might be worth a call.

Long shots include donations (they come & take down what they need) to
Habitat for Humanity
Goodwill shops willing to come & get it (rare)
High School wood shops
There was a TexAgs poster looking for free lumber within the last 6 months ...

Hoping Socialism Sucks gets it all but that means You taking it all down, dealing with the nails, shipping, etc.

I'll repost this for you on my facebook website ....

Howdy! I sell reclaimed barns, barn beams, and furniture made from beams.

Do you know the age of the barn?

The bad news is all "reclaimed" doesn't have a good fair market value. For example, people contact me all of the time with "old barns from 1920s".

We like the 1800s hand hewn barns with big beams.

Softwood Dimensional lumber just doesn't have a lot of value. If it's rough sawn and dry, table builders may be interested, but s4s (surfaced four sides) like you get at a lumber yard is maybe worth $.50 a board foot if you disassemble the barn and cut things square and stack it nicely. (A lot of work)

Believe it or not, if the siding is weathered but in good shape, it's probably worth $4 per square foot or so and more if it's wide.

So, that was a lot of words and unfortunately, most of it probably not what you wanted to hear.

There is a place in south Dallas, Old Texas Wood, that deals in reclaimed lots - mainly for installation as flooring.
