Anyone hit Taylormade P790's?

Curious if anyone has feedback on these clubs?

I've been taking lessons for close to a year to try and get myself from a hacker playing 6-10 rounds a year to being respectable on the course as I now have more time and ability to dedicate to the game.

I had a failed fitting a few months back. After warming up like normal, I developed the yips and was struggling to make consistent contact. Ultimately we decided to toss that fitting out until we had more reliable data, but of the 5 different clubs I hit the P790's the best by far. I've used them a few times since in my lessons and they've still felt nice.

I have rescheduled the fitting as I've progressed quite a bit since. A buddy of mine was fit elsewhere recently, and coincidentally these are what he ended up with. He is a much better golfer than I (probably averages 1-2 rounds/week). So far, he has said when he hits pure they are great, but he hasn't been hitting pure consistently and appears to be navigating that adjustment.

We will see how things go in the fitting, but if the results are similar I am a little apprehensive about the P790's at my skill level based on what my friend's feedback. I believe they are classified as a players distance club as opposed to game improvement. He historically has been a much better ball striker than I, but I have certainly narrowed that gap.

Just curious if anyone who hits them (or anyone with experience in this area) has feedback. I've had a set of Callaway X-22 irons for 15 years and they served their purpose up to now for reference. I'm a little apprehensive about jumping in to a players distance iron at my level. Or should I just trust the data if I see similar results?

I welcome any feedback the group can offer.

I have the 2023 version that I really like. Got fitted for them. Did add a little yardage to my iron distances. I'm in a windy area of the state and they seem to create a ball flight that is very piercing. I have the stiff MMT graphite shafts.

Excellent. You mentioned the piercing, that's interesting and would probably be a good thing with my swing. With the current clubs my launch angle/ball flight is typically higher than the normal range. I was hitting in to a screen of course, so hadn't considered the wind. I'm in southern CA in the coast, so we definitely have winds to contend with at times.

Thanks for the reply!

I play the 2023s and they are awesome. I would not be intimidated by them. Very forgiving but still give good feedback if you hit it bad.

They really are the perfect irons to play until you get to sub 3 HCP.

I'm in the 2023s too and your story is very familiar. When I was fit, it came down to the Mizuno 923s and the P790s. My fitter said the 923s would help more instantly, but my game could grow more with the 790s.

I've been using the current model since April and like them. Very forgiving and long due to strong lofts but that's the norm now for this category of club. I was worried about distance control and a "hot" face but these are very consistent, especially on 8-PW.

P790s are game improvement clubs, don't let anyone fool you. Similar to the Ping i500 line, P790s are made to go high and far. The lofts are super aggressive and you're unlikely to spin the ball as much, so stopping power on the green can be a problem sometimes.

If you're coming for X-22s, P790s are going to feel like a rocket launcher for you.

FWIW, if you get your specs, you can probably find a good set of the 2023s at a place like 2nd swing. Just walk out of your fitting knowing your shaft/length/lie/etc., and you can probably find yourself a deal, though they hold their value pretty well.

I got myself a partial set of the 790's and love them. I only have 6-PW. I hit the ball higher than most so I went with a lower-mid launch shaft.

They're great clubs. Forgiving on off center contact is my favorite aspect of them. I don't play as much as I used to with two kids so my swing isn't as consistent.

They are lofted strong but that's easy to figure out.

Really appreciate all of the responses folks! Makes me feel a heck of a lot better that if I go that route I won't necessarily be in over my ski's and regret the purchase.

I think I easily gained 10-15 yards on average from swinging them initially, and that wasn't hitting pure. The rocket launcher analogy seems to hold water

I'll report back with the final decision post-fitting.

I currently play at set of Srixon ZX5 irons from 2021.. A friend had a set of 2023 P790s which I hit several times and never thought they were better than my Srixons as far as feel and ball flight goes. Taylormade updates their P790s every two years. My buddy recently got the 2025 P790s and they are amazing. I don't know if it's the difference in the stock shafts, not sure what he had in the 2023 model but the 2025 model has stock KBS Tour Lite Stiff Flex. I have a slower swing speed so I play regular flex shafts, he also added a heavier midsize grip so maybe they feel great to me because the swing weight is now probably a D1.
With that said, I'm planning on buying a set of the new releases Battle Worn P790s with the black finish

Thanks. Now I'm staring at the battle worn irons on the site, for the 1000th time. If I win member guest, it's happening. Just can't justify it right now.

Lol. Yeah, I figured. Pretty sure the global odds are roughly 10%, so it usually doesn't work out! Thank you though! Hopefully someone else seeing the thread that is curious snatches them up!
