While I was pissed that sip and sooner were joining the SEC, I was intrigued by the new-look Big 12. It managed to outsmart the PAC and get the last remaining seat at the table and had a host of new schools that looked like the makings of a really fun league. There were some schools with really juicy rivalry potential. Tech and oSu seemed like sure things from a rivalry standpoint. Hell, they could even try to get Xerox to sponsor it. Utah/BYU is already a proper hate-filled showdown. ASU/AZ had potential as well as the return of Colorado after years of PAC exile. Farmaggedon is a great name! I had high hopes for the Big12. Plus, without sip in it, I didn't have much reason to hate it.

So far, my high hopes have been pretty well dashed. I just can't find any reason to give a bleep about the league. Tech doing well doesn't move the needle. Not because of my old dislike of Tech, but because if Tech is doing well but not at the expense of sip or sooner, it just doesn't really register (for me anyways). University of Houston? Absolutely couldn't care less. University of Cincinnati? OK, I was wrong, I clearly can care less. UCF? Seriously? Man, what a let down it must be for Tech to lose sip and gain UCF.

What's the marquee game for the Big 12 now? Is it Utah/BYU? AZ/ASU? Tech/TCU? Anything? The Big12 just reminds me of three-day-old leftovers in the fridge. Can you eat them? Yes. Do you want to? No. Just an absolute shame what happened. The Big12 used to be on par with the ACC, B1G, PAC, and SEC. Now it's just an afterthought.

Hopefully the Big12ers are loving the new conference. Just because I find it boring and sad doesn't mean everyone else does.

Oh, us Big12ers are IN on this conference. It's the future of college football, no doubt, and while rivalries will take a time to gestate, THE TWELVE is well on its way to be the premiere athletic conference. It's only a matter of time.

Tick.. tock...

Stay tuned...

The reason that the SEC wants to remain…parochial, for want of a better term, is that one can board a bus at the western terminus and be anywhere in the conference in a day's sojourn by motor coach. By comparison, look at the United Athletic Conference (Tarleton, ACU) which ranges from the southeast to the Mountain West.

I'm just commenting on the fact that the BIG BOYS have teams spread throughout the country, not an isolated regional area.

Not intended as schtick. Why do you think the NFL plays games overseas? You have to keep expanding, you can't be satisfied where you're at.

I saw some posts mocking BigXII games being televised on the CW Network. But I remember a time when ESPN exclusively showed darts and bowling, but then slowly rolled out college sports. If Tech would have played a game on ESPN back when it started, people would be laughing.

The only people excited about the Big XII are UH, Cincinnati, and UCF because they don't belong in the conference.

ESPN killed the ACC, Pac 12, and Big XII. IMO the college football product is suffering because of it.

ESPN saved the Big12. Had ESPN not agreed to pay sippy $300 million in 2010, sippy, sooner, oSu, Tech, and Colorado would have joined the PAC. Nebraska joins the B1G and A&M joins the SEC. This leaves 5 teams left in the league and there is a strong likelihood that Mizzou and Kansas bolt as well. In this scenario the Big12 doesn't reload, it expires.

The Big12's current predicament is completely on t.u.'s shoulders (not that they care). Had they not opened Pandora's Box with the PAC debacle, none of the schools that departed in 2010/2011 would have left. The LHN would exist but would only be bringing in about 1-2 million for sippy, which doesn't change the game like $300 mil does. So all the big dogs and semi-big dogs would still be in the conference. But instead, the greed of sip destroyed a really strong regional conference.

I find the Big 12 boring. I also find the SEC boring. And the B1G.

Conference realignment has ruined football, at least for me.

Laugh all you want, but I think barring a major conference realignment, Tech will be in the B1G within 3 years. It's a toehold into Texas that those schools do not currently have, and Tech is a large enough school to bring interest, along with major program funding and multi-sport relevance.

I think the current Big 12 will get picked apart.

I personally think that mega-conferences are ruining natural, regional rivalries. Tech doesn't even play TCU or Baylor this season. It's stupid. The SEC is at least trying to create or hold onto historic rivalries. The Big 12 is clueless.

The CFP also needs to be reworked. There is talk of as many as 6 SEC teams making it into the CFP this year. Irrespective of whether those teams deserve to be in the CFP or not, having that sort of alignment just makes the regular season meaningless. The SEC may as well just start its own semi-pro league and call it a day. Call me old fashioned or whatever, but if a 5th or 6th place SEC team is in the CFP, I've lost all interest in watching them in the post-season, because the regular season results already decided that those teams are not national championship contenders. No 3 loss team is, or should be, in the championship discussion.

Nevermind the SEC media bias. It exists, and if you are so myopic as to disagree with that, then there is little discussion to be had,

But yeah. The Big 12 sucks.

And I would rather Tech play in the Sunbelt than play in the SEC, or ever play in the same conference with Texas ever again.

there's no reason to be emotionally attached to these conferences. they're middleman. I have nostalgic feelings for the SWC because I was a little boy and it truly represented our region. Texas (w one exception). But that's gonzo.

the big 12 will devolve into crabs in a barrel. good luck

Why do they keep calling it the " Big 12" when there is 16 Teams? Is that the metric version of it or what? Or are four of them really irrelevant….just don't know which four?

You could be right, but currently would be considered for the B1G because they are not an AAU member. Doesn't mean they cannot work to meet AAU criteria at some point in time.

I hope you're right, I really do. Maybe some team will rise up to be the bell-cow. It ain't helping that Gundy decided to pout and let oSu slide into the shidder.

Tech might get an invite to the B1G. Nebraska isn't in the AAU anymore so that may not be the sticking point it used to be. I'm still of the opinion that sippy joins the B1G in about 10 years. The GOR expires in 2034 and we all know sip is about the money. They would have joined the B1G rather than the SEC but the LHN contract with ESPN nixed that.

I think the Big12 is trying to see if there are any combos that get enough eyeballs to warrant a better TV deal next go-round. That's going to be the struggle. Can this group of schools out-perform the contract from a ratings perspective? If it can, the Big12 will have a stronger negotiating position. Given how spread-out the conference is, regional rivalries are going to be difficult to protect.

I preferred the 4-team setup. With 5 major conferences (at the time) and only 4 spots, there was great intrigue at the end of the year. Once it went beyond 4, the importance of the regular season took a big hit.

Quote:

Nevermind the SEC media bias. It exists, and if you are so myopic as to disagree with that, then there is little discussion to be had,

There is certainly an SEC bias on ESPN. Since they have a stake in the league they are going to give its teams more exposure whenever possible.

Really? According to this ISU writer, A&M was the true villain of realignment. You should be wanting to avoid any conference A&M is in.

I don't blame A&M a bit for wanting to go to the SEC and get away from Texas. I don't care what an ISU person thinks of A&M. Or Texas. Or Tech for that matter.

I hope Tech never plays Texas again. In anything. Ever.

It probably won't happen in my lifetime, but I'd love to see Tech and A&M schedule a home and home.

But Texas?

Eff Texas.

My least favorite schools in college football are Alabama, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. Unless they are playing Texas.

Texas can ****ing rot.

LOL! He just mad and jealous no one sees any value anywhere other than the big 12 for them. Now they are stuck with a conglomeration of schools from conferences that were left behind. At any rate, how did our leaving hurt his little school?
