Howdy. I'm having to relocate to Houston from Dallas sometime next year. I'm from Houston so it's not a big deal to me and I know the city pretty well. However what I don't know is where all the Memorial Day and Harvey floods occurred neighborhood by neighborhood.

We are first time homebuyers and we keep looking at the FEMA maps and the free floodscores on Zillow, and they're full of mixed info and 4/10, 6/10, etc. flood scores, so that has my wife nervous. Are there any other good websites or resources you may have? My google searches lead me to reddit posts which then is just full of posters saying the maps are clueless… Thanks Ags!

I used to (recently dropped subscription) work with mapping software that had an add-on for a "premium" flood layer. This premium layer seemed identical to what Realtor.com uses.

A less conventional map is to use the Harvey satellite imagery that were taken via planes / satellites. Won't be 100% accurate since they weren't taken at peak flood, but you can clearly see some areas that flooded.

Every flood is different though so YMMV. I had a car flood in a parking lot when we got 8 inches of rain in 90 mins. Everyone in Houston should have flood insurance.

If you get on Google Earth and go to the historical aerials, there are aerials from 8/30/2017. Depending on where you're looking, that may not be peak Harvey, but it'll be pretty close.

If you're gonna do this, just download the FEMA layer.

I prefer other real estate apps but Trulia mobile app in its maps has a Natural Disaster filter under Local Info. Annoyingly I haven't found this filter on their website. Definitely cross reference with FEMA but it gives a good idea.
