Any insight as to what HEB is doing related to 2026 Winter storm

I live in Alamo Heights, and I frequent my HEB A LOT. This morning stopped in for something on the way to the office at 7:00. I am a frequent enough visitor to this store that I notice the patterns. This morning there were an unusually large number of cars in the parking lot for this time of the morning. I went in the store, and there were stockers, a lot more than usual, who were either switching out merch or removing it completely. This evening I stopped in at 5:30, and large sections of the store were just empty. (See pictures below).

I have been through panic buying before, and these empty shelves were not the result of panic buying. Usually with panic buying there are still empty boxes laying around. These shelves had been intentionally cleared by the store.

I asked the lady at checkout if they had cleared the shelves. She said they had been busy today. I have been in the store when bad weather has come, before Super Bowl, and before major holidays. This store didn't come close to that busy.

Something tells me they cleaned this store out for either relief efforts or redistributing to other stores.

I mean… 82 cents a pound for potatoes? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

About 80% of a potato is water. Bottled water is a better deal.

Nah dude, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one: people are dumb.

Until you want french fries or a baked potato.

I was in the Weatherford (Hudson Oaks) HEB yesterday morning and while it was packed the shelves seemed full to me, especially the egg and bread aisles. And there were pallets of stuff all over the store, 6-7 of them, waiting to be shelved. Every cart I looked at seemed to have water and TP in them.
People are dumb.

Panic buying, pure and simple.

I don't know what the hell San Antonio folk are scared of. Yall are just going to be kissed by the edges of this storm at worst. People are just f'ing dumb.

Even up here in Dallas I think people are over reacting. We will be above freezing by Tuesday. Its not like a few years ago when it didn't get above freezing for a week.

I have noticed at either HEB or Sam's, EVERY SINGLE TIME there is an emergency or a weather event the Ozark bottled water (all of it, sport bottles, 16oz. etc.) ALWAYS goes first. As in, it's either bought up or pulled by employees to be given/distributed elsewhere. I have literally seen this happen in front of me. The other brands remain, but Ozarka always gets pulled or sells out first.

I buy Ozarka cases, multiple per month.

It's a meme now that Dasani is always the last one left.

We just got back from the HEB in Magnolia. The parking lot wasn't super full. The store was reasonably well stocked, but the chip aisle was hit pretty hard. Plenty of milk, bread and TP. Certain brands of bottled water were low.

They probably rerouted some shipments up here to DFW to help restock shelves (although we do not have many HEBs yet)

I think what they did was to pull back on some in-store inventory to moderate the panic buying and hoarding. I went Saturday at 6:00 PM, and while some stocks were low compared to how they normally are, there was still plenty to be had. Selection was a little lower than usual, and mainstream stuff was fine. Meat and produce were also low, but fine.

I went for bread and eggs because we were legit out at home. They had plenty of staples.

My buddy is an executive chef for Central Market. He said this time last year they averaged about $125M in revenue per day (HEB + CM). Leading up to this storm, they were at $250M per day!
