Wife and I taking leave in a couple of months for an extended (10 weeks) trip to Italy.

Anyone have any experience with using an eSIM app for their phones?

If yes, any recommendations? How did they work out? Any issues? Etc.

Depending on the country I use HolaFly or Airlo, just depends who is cheapest. No issues after dozens upon dozens of trips.

Holafly is what I use globally…just make sure your phone is unlocked and accepts new eSIMs.

Used Airalo in multiple EU countries with no issues. Biggest thing is make sure you change your phone settings to not get billed by your US carrier too.

I leave my US sim on because it costs nothing to receive messages, but ensure I turn off mobile data on that sim and do not send texts or make calls

Airalo or RedteaGO are what I've used. RedteaGO tends to be cheaper but super reliable, I used that in China and Europe last year.

Most of the e-sim apps are data only, which will usually suffice for most tourists. But if you are going to be in Italy for 10 weeks, you might want to look into getting one with a phone number. I did that on a trip to France in 2022, and with my dual sim capability and a T-Mobile plan that allowed me to keep my American number active, but use the French provider for data, I had two phone lines and all the data I needed.

One option is to get a Google Voice number or Skype number. Then you can use that app over data for a number to make calls.

Used breeze and it was exactly like its namesake, for phones and iPads. Super simple.

We are on ATT with iPhones and we haven't had to do anything on our last several trips (Canada, New Zealand, Argentina, Scotland). Heck Argentina didn't even have an upcharge.
