We are looking at flying into either Portland or Eugene to spend 4 to 5 days along the coast, anywhere from Florence up to Astoria. We have never been to this area and would welcome any recommendations on which areas to stay, etc. Mainly interested in the beach areas, some hiking, a little shopping, etc. Cannon Beach seems like a popular choice but we are open to all suggestions. Thanks!

The Fort to Sea hike from Ft Clatsop in Astoria was pretty cool.

We toured from one end of the coast to the other in 2019. Had a blast. Gold Beach was awesome. Loved Jerry's river raft tours (my wife's favorite tour on the trip).

Had a blast on Oceanside. Favorite place to eat on the Trip - Roseanna's

Awesome B&B - thyme & tide

Thor's Well in Yachat, OR

State parks all up and down the coast.

Excellent hole in the wall seafood restaurants all up and down the coast!

Whales... did I say whales!

Crater Lake (not on the coast) is INCREDIBLE!

white trash crabbing at Kelly's.........you'll net a ton of crabs, with only about 1% being legal in size.....they actually have a good selection of craft beer in the fridges.......bring a chair if you can.....

guaranteed a good time to be had by all......

Yachats was a nice, central location to stay along the coast. Not overly crowded or touristy

I am sitting in a vrbo rental just south of Yachats right now and it is beautiful here. Would highly recommend the "Oregon House" properties managed by (https://www.sweethomesrentals.com). We are in Harmony at Oregon House and it is perfect for a couple. It is a duplex with Serenity at Oregon House. It has a private access to the beach below and balconies/benches to watch the sunset. We ate at Luna Sea Fish House in Yachats last night and the fried halibut and chips was delicious, as were the fried tiger prawns. We went to the Oregon Coast aquarium up in Newport today and enjoyed it, ate at the Chowder Bowl (chipotle shrimp wraps were delicious), and did some agate hunting on Stonefield Beach. We are going up to Depoe Bay tomorrow for a whale watching boat trip. Will let you know how it turns out.

FYI, Crater lake is still open, but the boat tours of the lake and out to Wizard Island are done and won't resume for at least the next 3 years. You can still walk down the trail to the water for now, but that will be closed in the next few weeks probably.

If you are looking for something in between, we stayed at Umpqua's Last Resort (https://www.golastresort.com) on the NorthUmpqua River about halfway between Roseburg and Diamond Lake. We stayed in one of their glamping tents and it was really well setup. King bed with bed heater, running water in outdoor sink, adirondak chairs, charcoal grill, fire pit, lights and electrical plugs, etc. very comfortable and affordable. There is lots of good fishing and hiking nearby. Watson Falls and Toketee Falls were a couple of favorites with relatively short trails to gorgeous waterfalls.

It's open, but Cleetwood is closing.

Here's the thing though. The crater rim is the jam for a non-water type guy.

Ride the Rim is two weekends in Sept. Every year. Bike only.

Crater also sees 400" of snow on average a year. It has some the most approachable backcountry skiing in the country. https://www.thewildoutsiders.com/adventure-journal/crater-lake-ski-circumnavigation

So, who cares if a trail is closed. So much more to that volcano. I look forward to fewer crowds and easier parking.

I know I didn't really answer. But we've hammered central and north OR coast many times here.

I'm in PDX.

Have you done southern OR / NorCal?

I'd contemplate SFO and Redwood Nat / Shasta / Brookings, OR / Ashland, OR / Crater Lake as well. The redwoods are so cool and the coast line is great. Natural Bridges / Sam Boardman State park is the best coastline in OR. Ashland, just Google Lithia Park and come in October. Rent a MTB and head to the mountains. Shasta is a cool volcano. Crater is a cool blown-up volcano.

Cannon Beach wasn't my scene. Too touristy (and I grew up in Galveston)! Had some great crab and service at Bridgewater Bistro in Astoria.

Whale boat got cancelled because the coast guard wasn't allowing the smaller boats to go out. Good thing too because the whole coast from at least as far south as Florence to north of Depoe Bay was socked in with <1/10th mile viz solid to the shore. We did see a few whales from the shore viewpoints where the fog lifted occasionally. We ate at the Hilltop Cafe south of Waldport tonight and it was excellent. The Teriyaki burger with pineapple was one of the top 3 I have ever eaten from a restaurant and my wife really liked her crab mac and cheese. If you are here during high season, a reservation would be a good idea, but we didnt need one tonight at 6:30 on a friday.

North of Tillamook there is a cove with a little town built around it. The town is Garibaldi.

Right as you come out of the cove, headed north, there is a local eating place on the left. It is on the water. Name of the place is Pirates Cove.

It has the best and largest oysters we have ever had. And we ate the medium size oysters.

We have eaten there twice. GREAT both times. Pretty much nothing but locals in there. Second time we ate there we drove 3 hours out of the way to get there. Worth every mile.
