Airline: We're going to charge you to check a bag, BUT we're so kind we allow you to carry a bag on the plane with you.

Also Airlines: We need 17 people to gate check your carryon bag. You should have checked it in the first place because we dont actually have room for it, so if you don't it's just going to delay your flight and it'll be all your fault.

I will say, one of the more positive things to happen in the last few years are the taller overhead bins where you can stand luggage on its side. Really helps with the density (although there are always a few morons who still lay their bag flat up there).

Yeah, charge for checked, carry-on is free?

Completely backward to how it should be, if they want to speed loading/unloading.

I usually check two bags and bring a backpack with me on the plane. I just bought a new carryon so I can bring 3 bags with me on vacation this month. Will see how that goes.

you're paying for the added weight. A checked bag weighs 2-3X your carry on, which adds to fuel costs.

I think there are people who purposely don't pay to check a bag from the start, but will gate check a bag because it's free.

The airlines created the current mess with carry-ons when they started charging for checked bags in 2008 (American was the first to do so, according to the Googlez). Previously the cost of checked bags was simply a part of the cost of the ticket.

They could go back to that logic and build the baggage fee into the cost of every ticket, and make more money, because not everyone will check bags, but everyone would get charged the fee. Airlines win because they make more money, and customers see a decrease in carry-on bags overall, expediting the boarding/deboarding process.

Solution: something the size and weight of a carry-on bag is free. Anything bigger/heavier incurs a charge.

If you want to start discussing weight, then weigh the person and their bag. No reason why my 30 pound granddaughters pay the same as a 300 pound land whale.

I don't think the American carriers really care too much about the length of boarding time.

United is now asking people to line up and start boarding 45 minutes before departure on a 737 which used to be how long it took to load a 747 with twice as many people.

If they could find a way to reduce the number of fake service pets, I'd support that too.

While we're at it, let's bag on the carriers who make you weigh your carry on bags - personal item AND roll aboard - together, and the combined weight must be <12 kg.

I've been forced to check my carry on bag twice this year because of that. Air New Zealand wouldn't print my boarding pass until I weighed my bag, and there were scales at the gates, too.

Air France at CDG forces you to weigh your bag at the front of the security line and will refuse to let you proceed until you go check it at the counter.

Domestically I only fly Delta and have never seen them weigh or measure carry-on's.

It's typically not a US-based carrier issue. It's mostly the foreign airlines. But I also had Air France make me check my carry on bag at IAH. I had booked through Delta, and my boarding pass was not correct. When I went to the AirFrance counter to get a BP, they made me weigh my bag before they would issue the BP.
