I have to be in Austin Sept 3-6 for CE credits. It's been 35 years since I spent any time there (6th street, etc). I know that is now an area to avoid. Any suggestions on where to go to dinner, lunch? Mothership is sold out shows, the ACL band doesn't interest me. I do plan to tour the Capitol, Texas State CemeteryAnd eat at Stubbs BBQ one day. Any advice appreciated.

If you haven't been in 35 years, you won't recognize the place and will probably hate it. It's ridiculously huge now and the infrastructure can't support all the people living there now. I avoid the place at all costs. Thank God for the east side loop.

County Line BBq on the lake. Still a slice
of old Austin amongst all the madness.

As of a few years ago it was still there and still selling mad dog margaritas.

Compared to SA, Houston and Dallas this is completely wrong.

If you want a great dinner, you need to book reservations a month plus in advance. In order of my preference.

Red Ash - top spot but kind of impossible to get in to
J Carver - great steakhouse
Clarks - great spot for weekend mid-day lunch
ATX Cocina - not impossible to get a table
Aba - very LA scene
Aris - back up to J Carver

Red Ash isn't as hard to get into as it use to be. Also, its overrated.

Fonda San Miguel is our go to dinner spot when we visit Austin. We usually sit at the bar and eat/drink. Food and drinks are top notch as well as the service. It's more authentic Mexican rather than Tex-Mex.

Thanks for all the recommendations. My trip to Austin was actually fantastic. I was expecting the opposite. First, the homeless problem was not as bad as what I anticipated. They were there, but certainly not any worse than Houston or Dallas.

While my wife was in seminars all week I got to day drink in some old Austin haunts and the electric scooters are pretty cool even for an almost 60-year-old.

Texas chili parlor Mad Dog Margaritas
Scholz Garten- many beers
Stubbs -many beers
Pelon's - more margaritas

Food was fantastic.
Best taco I've ever eaten. Was it a place called Taqueria 10/10 in the alleyway behind P.F. Chang's at 206 Trinity. It came highly recommended by the hotel staff and the place doesn't even have a sign.

A hamburger at a place called Casino El Camino on sixth Street, which is recommended by every bartender that serve me

The Driskill Hotel is stunning and I can't wait to go back when the bar is finished being refurbished

The Texas state cemetery is a must visit for any Texan.

Always a Chili Parlor fan. They still have a decent chili cheese burger. Place hasn't changed much since I was single digits. I do miss the jalapeno candy.
