We have a long weekend in late September we are trying to find travel plans for and have jumped around a little bit from a couple of different destinations, but are starting to zero in on the Portland area.

Is late September a good time to go, coupled with side trips to Cannon Beach and Columbia River Gorge? Seems like there's a lot to do there with the kids (9 and 12).

Can only speak for Canon Beach but in general, September is a great month to visit. Less crowds, especially in the vacation hubs. Weather is more mild so you may get some rainy days but it's not typically as much as during the winter. Good for being outdoors and hiking. I think whale migration is in the Sept/Oct timeframe so that'd be a fun family activity.

Sounds like you're on the right track!

Make sure to visit the Tillamook factory! Some fun stuff for kids there.

Is whale watching something you'd need to book an excursion for or can you see them from shore?

Book an excursion. You might be able to see them from the shore but it's easier to be mobile on the water.

Yeah, what he said ^

I think they also have dolphin cruises.

Another vote for Tillamook! The ice cream and cheese samples were delicious!

I usually stay in the Nedonna Beach neighborhood because we get more space for less money than Cannon.

Also, I can't say enough about how fun crabbing can be. Go here, they're super helpful:

Lol, did I sway you from Vancouver?!

I live in PDX with a 6 year old. We're not beach people, but we've spent plenty of time around Cannon, and 1000x more time in the Gorge/Hood.
