Family of 4. 2 small kids.
Never been. Will like access to beach and pool.

We often VRBO places so don't mind cooking a few meals and going that route.

The ritz/westin properties are a little steep. They're also on the west side of the island, is that the only real place worth staying?

Here's my trip report from February of 2024. Family of 3 and our daughter was 10 at the time. Stayed in Kihei at the Maui Banyan Resort/Condos.

I would highly recommend a condo in Kihei. I booked here but there are a lot of options available. https://www.kiheisurfsideresort.com/

We were in Maui the week of 4th of July. We stayed in Kihei at the Maui Parkshore condos unit 408. I don't think you can beat it for the price and location. If you don't have a Costco membership then I highly reccomend it as you can save a ton of money Getting some of your meals from there.

I like the Kapalua part of the island. And Napili Bay is perfect for a beach day.

Grand Weilea is great for a family towards the south side of Maui.

In 2019, we VRBO'd in Kihei for a week and then stayed at the Sheraton in Kaanapali for a week. I preferred Kihei. It was closer to the things we wanted to do and had plenty of food options (not that Kaanapali is void of restaurants, though). I think VRBO are more common in Kihei (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that), as Kaanapali felt more like big hotels (Kihei has those too). Having a VRBO was nice for cooking breakfast and packing lunches for the beach. We'd eat out at night and then walk beaches around sunset.

The Sheraton in Kaanapali was a bit run down but it was on the beach at Black Rock, which is good to snorkel, but crowded. Saw a reef shark there which was cool. But wouldn't stay at that hotel again if I went back. We walked into the Hyatt for a luau and it was much nicer.

You're really not going to go wrong with your decision. Snorkeling was great up and down both coasts. You can take a boat out to Molokini and snorkel there, too.

If you do Haleakala sunrise, spend your first night at the airport hotel and then drive to the mountain from there. You'll be early anyways and it shaves a ton of time off your route. Take a coat.

Also, the road to Hana not be super fun for kids. You have to make it an adventure. My son liked the Garden of Eden. I'd suggest staying one night in Hana, otherwise it's a really long, exhausting day and your wife will hate you and bring it up years later in random arguments. Go to the black sand beach the first thing in the morning after your night in Hana and you'll likely have it to yourselves, as the day trippers don't arrive til later. And ride the horses in Hana. It's a great view the whole ride.

Our last trip was like this:

Day 1: arrive, airport hotel
Day 2: Haleakala sunrise, road to Hana. Stayed at the nice hotel there.
Day 3: black sand beach, horses, finish road to Hana and stay in Kihei.
And then rest of trip split between the two places discussed above.

We stayed at Sugar Beach condos. Great beach in front yard and great pool. Reasonably priced.

I'd recommend Andaz Maui or Royal Lahaina.

Andaz is a stunning property. Great location & amenities.

Royal Lahaina recently remodeled their bungalows and can comfortably fit 4. Steps from the Ocean, pool on-site. Older part of the resort is more outdated but bungalows have received great reviews since the remodel.

I've booked a couple families at both of these properties for next year with some of the on-going promotions.

Happy to answer any questions!

Edit: Ignore. Incorrectly remembered that Andaz was adults only.

Edit: No worries. They do have an adults only pool in case anyone was interested.

We stayed at Grand Wailea in early June. It's a nice property. It has been "updated" but not "renovated" if that makes any sense. You could see the age in the doors and windows, around the elevators, pools, etc. We really didn't think it was a 5* property. The pools were fun for kids, but certainly not "nice". Lots of people and expensive. We walked over to Wailea Beach Resort (Marriott property) next door several times and I think that would be where we would stay if we went back. Wailea area is really cool, walking paths, shopping, restaurants, etc.

The Four Seasons on the other side of Grand Wailea was nice too. The Andaz down the way a bit was nice as well. We loved the beach path in the mornings.

Brooke Harrington booked the trip for us and did an amazing job. She posts here often - we would highly recommend using her services. She knew everything about the islands. Great resource.

With 2 small kids, I would look at a condo with a full kitchen.

We stay at the Marriott Maui Ocean Club on Kaanapali beach and it has a great pool for the kids. Look on redweek.com for deals on 2 bedroom/2 bath units. Be sure and book in either the Lahaina Tower or Napili tower buildings as these are the newer units with full kitchens & washer/dryers in the units.
