Oh man. They had two bad fires there this last week and had to evacuate the lodge. They were trying to manage the closer burn and it got away from them.

It just burned down. The lodge is gone along with what the are saying is 50-80 structures.

I've been there twice. It's an amazing place and so much nicer than the South Rim. Just devastating.

This is sad. I was looking at coverage and pictures last night. Black Canyon of the Gunnison also has a uncontrolled fire burning.

EDIT: Oh brother. That second tweet is so stupid and disingenuous.

Yeah. I posted it for the picture.

For those who have been to the South but not the North side, it is a very different experience. The view is much nicer and it's just so isolated. Even just walking away from the Lodge you can get away from people and not hear or see a soul very quickly.

And sitting on the veranda of the Lodge with your feet kicked up on the wall with a drink watching the sun set with only about 30 people is very nice.

One of my wife's and my personal favorite national park moments was sitting on the veranda drinking cold beers after a good day of hiking, watching and listening to a huge thunderstorm over the expanse of the canyon.

It was an incredible sight.

North Rim had a lodge? When I was there it was camping and pit toilets.

It's been there for like 90 years.

Huh. We went there because it was off the beaten path. I was happy to have a StarCraft.

I just hope they rebuild it the way it was: classic national parks (1930's) CCC era style.
Update the essential communications, insulation, windows, fire code, etc, increase the size, but leave the architecture style the same.

The egocentric post-modernist vomit that is the new Yellowstone visitor's center is infuriating.
