Camping at Signal Mountain on Jackson Lake with the wife and kid

Yellowstone for a day or two
horseback day trip - wife loves riding horses
Kayaking on the lake
Hiking around the Tetons

Should be a fun time. Guess I should start packing and loading the van with gear.

*Definitely get bear spray!! Ran into a cinnamon black bear on a trail about 10' away in the Tetons last year, that was..... exciting!
*Get up early if you want to see bears/wolves in Yellowstone. Lamar Valley is the spot to be. Take the best binos or spotting scope you have, or borrow some if you don't.

If you're still here, take the boat ride across Jenny Lake and hike to hidden falls. If you have the desire and ability head up to inspiration point and then up in to cascade canyon. Go early. It's great!

Phelps Lake is kid friendly, but they have a smaller parking lot. Again show up early. Easier hike.

Whatever you do will be amazing in this part of the world! Have fun!

If you've never been, definitely go by the Grand Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone. That area is like being on another planet.

Yep

Take the trail to Fairy Falls. The spring is pretty hard to see from the boardwalk. Gotta get up like this pic.

Loved the tetons, loved Jackson, Yellowstone was checked off the list. The geysers are cool, the upper and lower falls are cool, sitting in a car all day and/or fighting those crowds sucks.

Saw the following wildlife...

Ton of bison
Ton of elk
Bear walked through our campsite about 20 feet away from me. Idiot in campsite next to us shot off his bear spray and nuked the whole campground for 10 minutes or so
Fox walked through the campsite, middle of the morning
Deer walked past

Our trip was late in May, and the closer we got to Memorial Day, the worse the crowds

Can't imagine how bad the summer is

The easiest way to avoid crowds is to stay in the park and be willing to move.

Stay at the OF Inn (original rooms are amazing) and you will have that whole basin to yourself earlier in the morning or late in the evening. Watching OF go off from the Veranda with a drink in hand as the sun sets is really quiet. You can also bike to the lower and mid basins or drive there morning or evening.

Stay at the Lake Hotel or cabins there. That gives easy access to the Hayden Valley and the Falls.

Stay at Roosevelt Lodge (or even Mammoth) and you have the Mammoth area and Lamar Valley.

If you stay outside in West Yellowstone or even inside at one spot only you will be driving that figure 8 road all day.

Following this thread, appreciate the recs. We're leaving 8/2 for a full month 5th wheel trip thru South Dakota and Wyoming. Staying in grand Tetons for a week and Yellowstone for a week. Have most of the things mentioned in this thread on our list of things to do.

Taking our mountain bikes, are there trails to ride on up there?

Also, quite by accident , we'll be in SD during Sturgis. Kinda nervous but also a little intrigued to see that crowd. We're staying about 40 miles south but I expect we'll still see a bunch of bikers.

You will for sure see choppers! Enjoy.

As far as cycling…. YNP outside of the basin(s) mentioned above I have not found much. Off trail is not allowed in national parks.

There is a nice paved trail out of Jackson to Tetons. It's just a paved trail along the road, full exposure, but the views from town toward park are nice. I'm sure there is some public land with mtn. Trails if you search.

I remember the Teton village ski area was building out a system a few summers ago, unclear if you can bring your own rig or not, worth looking into. I'd make a reservation at Calico's now, get some late afternoon runs in at the village and grab a great meal and wine/cocktail post.
