I'm traveling to Puglia in a few weeks and have a 6 hour layover in Munch. My flight is scheduled to land at 9:45am, and I depart for Bari at 3:40. Does anyone have experience leaving the airport for a couple of hours with a similar timed layover? I don't know if I would risk going all the way into Munich, but I am considering going over to Freising or Erding via taxi for lunch. I don't know much of anything about the towns except they are 15-30 minutes from the airport and the pictures look nice enough.

I haven't flown to Munich in the past 45 years but, I drove to Munich 3 weeks ago and took the S Train a couple times.

According to Google Maps, it looks like they've got an S Train that runs every 10 minutes from the Flughaven and it's about a 50 minute ride from the airport to the downtown train station - Marienplatz

I have left the airport in Frankfurt during long layovers a few times. Obviously you've got to clear immigration but that usually doesn't take long for an American. Traveling from Germany to Italy should be pretty easy to clear security, get to your gate, etc. (lots of walking of course).

Inside 6 hours, I'd give you 45-60 minutes to deplane, clear immigration, grab some Euros at the ATM and figure out where the Bahnhof is. You'd want to be back at the airport with 90 minutes to spare.

1 hour each way on the S train and you're looking at maybe 90-120 minutes in the Munich CBD. Which is enough time to go the Hofbrauhaus, etc.

The airport is in the NE, so I would take the S-Bahn to the north/nord (e.g., Schwabing neighborhood adjacent to the English Gardens) or the east/ost. Find an Augustiner biergarten to have the best local bier or set in the English Garden and have a bier at the one of many outdoor biergartens.

Just a note if you have not taken the S-Bahn to the airport in Munich before; The train splits in Neufahrn and one half goes to the airport and one goes a different way. They do not do a good job making this announcement in anything but German, so if you get on the wrong train car you might end up somewhere else entirely and miss the airport. We only learned this because I have family who rode the train with us to the airport to make sure this didn't happen to us. We got on the 'correct' car in the CBD, but they changed it during our journey due to a train delay, and we had to disembark and run down the platform to get into another car. It is about a 45 minute ride total from downtown.

As you said, Freising is close to the airport, maybe the next stop north? I'd very much recommend going. It's home to the oldest brewery in the world, also a college campus. It's a pretty good walk up hill. But it's an awesome destination that I don't know if you'd have an opportunity to do otherwise. The airport and or train station should have lockers to store luggage.

This is probably what I'd do.

Regarding the S-Bahn splitting, the S1 train splits. The S8 train only ends at the airport, if you're worried about that. You can also ask a worker on the platform, they're usually standing around, at least at the Hauptbahnhof.

That would be awesome to go. They have a podcast, too, that is very interesting.
