I am a travel advisor, one of my specialties are River Cruises. My contact info is in my bio to start the process. There are a lot of factors to look into when picking a ship and Brand. I would love to help with your adventure.
Don't just limit yourself to a Nile River Cruise. Egypt is a great country to visit with a ton to see. I used www.memphistours.com to plan a trip there and they were terrific to work with and incredibly cheap. We had private guides and drivers from Cairo to Aswan, stayed in nice hotels, included in country flights and it was way less than a trip to Disneyworld. I can't wait for my kids to get older enough to go back.
Also, make sure you make it to Abu Simbel. It was my favorite site and the story of them moving it piece by piece is really interesting.
My extent of cruising the Nile was going from one bank to the other and back when we visited Karnak Temple and the Valley of The Kings.
It was hot as heck when we stayed in the New Winter Palace in August 1984. A quick glance at Google Maps says it looks like things have grown tremendously since I was there. Hopefully the rest hasn't changed too much during the past 4,000 years or so.
We used avalon in late 2023 and they were great. Excellent service, great boat and guides. Good service at the airports too, which turned out to be important when we encountered a bad security agent. couple of things to be aware of. One, everyone will be trying to sell you something. you have to be firm and totally ignore them. that was advice from our guide and it was true. Also, all imported booze has a 450% tax on it. So a shot of Jim Beam is like $30. But the Egyptian liquor is cheap.
It is a great trip of a lifetime. Hope you have a good time. We also showed up early and did a couple of day tours with Memphis Tours and they were good.
If you are not working with a travel advisor yet, I would love to assist. I booked 2 river cruises for clients just this past week, Avalon and Ama Waterways. I've personally traveled on one as well. My email is in my profile if you would like to reach out.
Went right after the Revolution so the boats were empty. 125 passenger boat only carried 27 passengers. Baksheesh is an issue most are not used to. Try to get as much small local change as possible as the attendant will want something every time you go to the toilet. Gets difficult for most Americans.
RE: Local Currency. I converted $300 at the airport to Eqyptian currency because everything I read said US dollar is not widely accepted. I found US dollars to be accepted virtually everywhere, Often preferred to local currency. I ended up having to use the Egyptian currency for tips, etc. and still came home with some. Just my experience.
Just got back last Friday from our trip. Was a last minute deal after flights to Tel Aviv were canceled.
We used Amawaterways. Thought they were great liked the fact that the ship only held max of 80 people I think (were only 40 on our cruise). Included 1st two days in Cairo where we caught Giza (pyramids) and Valley of the kings as well as museums in Cairo. Then flew to Luxor where we boarded the ship and began sailing. Stops at Edfu & Aswan as well as an add on flight to Abu Simbel. Flew back to Cairo & caught the palace there before flying home. They really catered to you every step along the way.
