Long layover at LAX

I have a work meeting coming up in June. My family will be in tow.

Our flights are all jacked up with several schedule changes from Delta in the past month. We now have a 9+ hour layover at LAX during our first leg.

Any ideas on how a family of four with teenage daughters can kill a day in Los Angeles?

The irony of having "dodger02" (Tommy Lasorda) as your username and wondering what to do in LA in June?

It's time... It's time for Dodger Baseball

Seriously though, over the years I've posted a few times on here about how to kill a day in LA during a long layover - which I've done many times traveling between the USA and Australia. Nevermind living in LA and having friends and family visit many times and want to "see the sights".
  • What do the arrival / departure times look like?
  • Are you on Delta coming and going, checking luggage straight through?
  • Age range of the kids?
  • Any specific interests? Universal / Disney / Santa Monica / Malibu / Hollywood Walk of Fame / In 'N Out Burger / Fatburger, etc.

We had a long layover there going to hawaii. We spent a lot of the day at Manhattan Beach. They have a little pier with an aquarium and some eats around the area. This was like 15 years ago so can't speak to the quality of the area now as I know a lot of cali has gone down the pooper

Arriving at like 9am. Departing at 6pm.
Delta all the way; may have some carry-ons but checking most luggage.
17 and 15 yo girls
Probably not doing an amusement park but the wife and kids usually like to sightsee.

I'm not opposed to renting a car for the day and just being a tourist.

Alright - 9am arrival, 6pm departure

I'm going to model it like this:
9am - 10am deplane and make way to rental car

[ 10am - 4pm do stuff, adjust as needed to fit your precise flight times ]

4pm turn in rental car, get to terminal
5pm clear security, go to gate
6pm departure

Can you save some time with Uber? Yes but... not always.
Because you're waiting at their mercy which can be a hassle at times. Also, Uber isn't immune to traffic. One time during a long layover, I was trying to make my way up La Cienega to Sunset in an Uber and it took about 1:45 to travel what is normally a 45 minute / 13 mile trip. Plus, there was some sort of Uber surge that day so just getting a ride took 20+ minutes.

Here are a few things that 15 - 17 y/o girls might enjoy (at least my daughters enjoyed some of these at similar ages). You can map these out and figure out what you want to do. You won't be able to hit them all.
  • Santa Monica - 3rd Street Promenade / Santa Monica Pier
  • Malibu - celebrity sightings can be had at some of the restaurants like Coogies if that area is accessible after the fires. Personally, I always enjoy a drive up Topanga Canyon to Woodland Hills. Or, even better, is the drive from Pepperdine University up Malibu Canyon Road to Calabasas.
  • Burbank - A lot of people like to get pictures in front of the gate to the Disney Studio on Alameda Blvd. And if you want to kill some time and catch a movie with people who make the movies, the downtown Burbank AMC16 is the place to go.
  • Glendale - Americana on Brand has a nice courtyard sort of area and shops the girls will like and plenty of cashed up Armenians. Accessory dogs are a major trend there.
  • Studio City / Universal - Everybody who wants Harry Potter stuff wants to go to Universal City Walk. There are plenty of restaurants / entertainment experiences / shops you can go to without buying admission to the theme park. And the In 'N Out Burger in Studio City is usually full of tourists ticking that box and ordering "Animal Style". I used to eat there weekly during the scamdemic.
  • Mulholland Drive - I personally enjoy driving up to the Runyon Canyon overlook where you can get great views of the LA Basin and also see the Hollywood sign.
  • Laurel Canyon - It isn't what it once was (back in the mid-2000s) but a free / fun thing to do is to check out the Laurel Canyon dog park and watch the professional dog walkers and the entertainment industry folks walking their dogs and sometimes also looking for dates (as featured in an Episode of Entourage - the grass is gone but there are still folks there looking to meet people).
  • Hollywood Blvd - Basically, if you want to see the street performers, that's all at Hollywood and Highland as well as shopping and entertainment. If you want to see homeless and Stars on the Walk, that's all down Hollywood to Vine and then south of Vine to Santa Monica.
  • West Hollywood / Sunset Strip - The super gay area of WeHo is on Santa Monica, west of La Cienega until you hit the Beverly Hills city limit. On Sunset, I do recommend The Rainbow (which ironically is NOT a gay place) for pizza which is legitimately good. It's a couple doors down from Whisky a GoGo and The Rainbow is still frequented by real rock and rollers. Plus the pictures on the wall are a time capsule of hair metal. I'll also add that I've been to a few gay restaurants in WeHo where the food was great.
  • Beverly Hills - There is free parking available and obviously loads of high end shops. There's some parking by Santa Monica and Rodeo Drive. Get out there and walk around. The girls I'm sure will love a walk down Rodeo Drive and window shopping. Be on the look out for wankers (usually Saudis and Emiratis) driving Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc. Head down towards Dolce & Gabbana and the girls will find great photo ops.
If you want to preview any of these places or get other ideas, I recommend checking out the YouTube Channel of German in Venice. GiV can also provide updates on current areas to avoid (like Venice Beach)

Edit: I forgot to add
  • Fairfax / La Brea - maybe even the La Brea Tar Pits. There's also the Museum of Modern Art there. You've also got "The Grove" which has upscale shopping and some food. If you've never seen Hacidic Jews walking the streets, you should take a drive on La Brea between Santa Monica and Wilshire. For me (who grew up in Saudi Arabia), it was a trip. And they're there every day so you don't have to schedule an appointment or anything. Also on La Brea is Pink's Hot Dogs and Trejo's Tacos.
  • Koreatown - This is one of the more sketchy looking areas but it really isn't. Just aren't that many native English speakers there. If you want old school Mexican, there's a restaurant called "El Cholo" which is good. And if you want fully legit Korean BBQ, there's a place called "Gangnam Station" that was great.

2nd Edit: Only in LA experience - The Gauntlet of Homeless + Illegals
If you really want to break your daughter's brains and make sure they stay on the straight and narrow follow this route to the Hollywood Home Depot.
  • Take "The 101" (Hollywood Fwy) South near Highland or Cahuenga (or earlier) and exit at Sunset.
  • Make a left, cross the freeway and then make a right into the Home Depot.
  • Just go in, walk around, get the vibe and then leave.
  • Leave out the east side of the parking lot and make a left on Sunset.
  • Make the right onto Wilton Place and follow the signs to get on The 101 North.
That should be an eye opening experience to keep your daughters.

Which reminds me, tell them to stay off their phones unless they are actively taking pictures. That way they can take it all in and don't miss anything.

One thing that is difficult to find information about is the current people mover / rental car center situation.

It looks like some of the rental car agencies - primarily Avis, are currently operating out of the new Rental Car Center but others like National and Hertz are not.

And it looks like the People Mover that is supposed to take people between a station at LAX and the Rental Car Center is not yet operational. So you'll still have to get a shuttle between LAX and the Rental Car facilities.

While 9+ hours seems like a long time, after deboarding and gettting out of the airport and then having to return rental car and go back through security, not as much time as you think.

1. As suggested above. Santa Monica is very close by and can check off a lot of things that the girls may want to do. Go to Beach, See the Ocean. The Pier can be fun, lots of selfie opportunities. The rides are nothing exciting there, but it is still cool to say you did them. Decent amount of options to eat on and around the pier with ocean views. Lots of options around Venice Beach too for the kids. My daughter liked see some of the stuff around Venice Beach, Muscle Beach, The outdoor rings/gymnastic stuff. etc. etc.

2. If killing time, my kids similar ages had a good time doing the touristy Hollywood stuff. Going into the Wax museum and some of the other trendy stuff there. Not that fun to me, but the kids enjoyed it and posted lots of photos doing that stuff.

3. Meals, you can probably bookend your day with too fun meals. Right after you get out of airport find a cool restaurant to eat at and confirm plans. Go to pier, ride rides, see beach, etc. Then do some touristy stuff or maybe go shopping on Melrose or something like that. See the Hollywood Sign (selfie). Then finish it off after a few hours with a cool different restaurant. I would not try to go too far. LA Traffic can bite you in the ass when you really don't want it too.

I have done a long layover out at the end of Washington Boulevard. Lots of fun beach and mexican restaurants there. Just drive around the top end of Marina del Rey. That way you are close to LAX traffic wise.

We used the Dayuse app to get a day-use hotel room, discounted off a full overnight fare, think it was the Courtyard at the Airport. Dropped our bags and then went to the aforementioned Manhattan Beach, had brunch at the Strand House, then walked the pier, there was a pro beach volleyball tournament going on so watched that a bit, hit another place for some drinks and by then with the early wake up that morning we were ready for a nap. Went to the hotel took a 3 hr nap, showered and went back to the airport. Having the hotel room to re-fresh before what I presume will be a long flight is clutch.

You could do something similar with the Resort Pass app and hang out at a nice hotel's pool.

I've done that (sort of).

Not all at one go but as of March, I have now driven the entire length of Interstate 10 from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL in my 2020 Jeep Wrangler.

My 1999 Expedition is 350 miles short - it's only been as far as Pensacola.

Good tip!

I've never heard of the Dayuse app but I've definitely had some long layover days where that would have been handy.

In February, I had a 12 hour layover in Frankfurt so I paid for a hotel room that I only used for 3-4 hours before I had to go catch my onward connection. This App sounds useful.

I didn't read the comments, but honestly, rental cars in LA are known to get broken into. I would probably look into something like LuggageHero and not leave anything in the rental car.

Rental Car breakins happen in LA, but nothing like San Francisco and unless your are at Griffith Park or other remote parking location, never heard of it being a real issue. Still might not want to lug your luggage around. Checking it for the entire trip might be the easiest thing to do if worried.

I would account for an hour to get to the rental cars and get out of the rental car facility. Its a really inconvenient situation that is slow.

Our family had a similar situation. My wife booked a private tour company to pick us up at the airport and drive us around. Did not have to mess with rental car, parking places, navigating a city we were unfamiliar with, etc. They hit all of the high lights of the city. The group is We Love LA Tours. Everyone had a great time. They will work within your schedule and then return you to the airport.
