My family is looking at renting an AirBnB for five days in late May in that area. My sons and I would like to play a couple of rounds of golf maybe at Hilton Head. Any recommendations on courses, place to stay and other things to do?

can you be more specific on where you're staying and that would help. Plenty of great golf there and things to do, but driving distance may impact recommendations.

Charleston to Sav is 2 1/2 hours apart.

It's been years since I've been there but Hilton Head National used to be a great course just before you get to the island

Hilton Head to Savannah is an hour max. Did you mean Savannah to Charleston?

Yes driving distance is a concern. We may break it up and stay a couple of nights in either Savannah or Charleston and three at Hilton Head.

I've personally been to/stayed in Savannah, Charleston, and Kiawah Island. However, only at hotel not airbnb's so no help there unless you want hotel recs.

golf: HH- these are the best public, although plenty of other lower budget courses on the island that are still great.

Kiawah- obviously Ocean Course, but the other courses there are great as well. beautiful island and very classy

I've never played in Charleston proper so no help there.

Sounds like you will have a car so go to the Angel Oak tree outside Kiawah Island. pretty neat to check out and worth the stop. Beaufort is also a cool town worth checking out for the day.

Is it strictly a golf trip, or family vacation that you want to play a round or two while there? So much great histroy, cool towns, food, bars, etc it is hard to go wrong in that area. My wife and I dream of retiring somewhere around there one day. We love it.

More of a sightseeing and exploring the area with a little golf mixed in for us guys. Probably will stay in a hotel in either Charlotte or Savannah so any recommendations would be appreciated.

If it was me, I'd do two days in Charleston and the three on Hilton Head.

I've only played golf on Kiawah Island and you can't go wrong with any of the courses. So much to see and do in and around Charleston with all the history. I've only stayed in VRBOs but nothing bigger than a two bedroom. As mentioned above, I'd definitely hit up The Angel Tree and Beaufort on the way to HH.

On Hilton Head I've only stayed at The Sea Pines Resort which has three courses, one being of course Harbour Town and the other two being Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point. Cant go wrong with any. I'd recommend eating at the Quarterdeck which is next to the lighthouse. Great food and awesome views on the deck of the 18th at HT. Make a reservation as far out as you can.

Make sure you check with the courses regarding aerification schedules.

As for Savannah, you could always make a day trip as it's only about 40 minutes away.

Below is a link of the hotels we've stayed at before on our trips and I highly recommend all of them. All were excellent.

Savannah-
Perry Lane- awesome location in the middle of everything imo

Kiawah Island-
Andell Inn-not part of the resort but right on the island

Charleston-

When I played the ocean course on Kiawah we did two nights at Andell Inn and two nights at the Vendue in Charleston. Allowed us to explore the countryside and do golf and then gave us time in town to explore the city.

Savannah was a separate trip and stayed at Perry Lane the entire time.

I'd stay in Charleston and do my golfing at kiawah over HH personally. As far as places to stay in Charleston, anything in the historic district is a great place to stay. I'm a bonvoy/hyatt loyalty member, so I've used the hotel bella grace in the past.

If you opt for Savannah, again the historic district is where you want to be. The JW on river st is a great place.

We stayed at this four-bedroom rental that is walking distance to King Street in Charleston. Highly recommend.

Might be an option if hotels don't work.

I am local to James Island. Heads up, there is an AirBnB district on the peninsula. Anything outside of it is illegal and they get busted all the time. As in you are getting kicked out of the house and you are now scrambling for a place to stay which last minute can be difficult.

We stay at the Sanctuary on Kiawah a couple times a year. It is central to the courses. Ocean Course is $600 + tip. You can play the other courses for half that. I am cheap and play the muni on weekday mornings. $20 to walk the course or $15 after 5:30.

For restaurants, Check out The Charleston Grill in The Charleston Place Hotel. Otherwise R Kitchen and Wild Common are excellent. If you are there on a Sunday hit up Hall's for Gospel Brunch. There are tons of other places. Just consult yelp to filter out the bad ones. Don't bother with sushi in this town.

Hotels aren't cheap. Anything under $250 and you are staying at a Hilton, Holiday Inn etc. branded hotel. There are some very nice ones in the $300-$400 range.

For a beach bum vibe stay at Tides Folly Beach. There is a bar by the pool and a bar on the pier. I am less than 15 minutes from there and like to take my laptop there to work.

If you are doing a trip from Charleston to Hilton Head to Savannah don't forget about Beaufort/Port Royal. Get rooms ahead of time as they completely fill up when recruits graduate basic.
