Nephew is graduating from the Coast Guard Academy in May 2025. We have a few days before and after that we were planning on wandering….so, looking for recommendations in or near:

Providence - Hudson Valley NY, and either Delaware or Manchester area.

We are flying into Providence and out of Manchester, and love small historical towns.

Thanks

On the front end, Newport is great for history and food. There's a museum on base at the Navy War College. It's not much, but if you get an awesome view of the bay and the giant bridge. If you're interested in that, I'd call ahead and get everyone without an ID on the base access list. I'm not 100% how in depth that process is, but I know it's doable

Ok your way to MHT, swinging through Portsmouth is worthwhile. Strawberry Banke is an old part of town that has been turned into an open air museum. For your Coastie, there's an old sub in town you can tour, and you can get a pretty good view of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where they work on the active subs.

I'm less familiar with the upper Hudson Valley, but my wife went to school at RPI in Troy. She says skip Troy and go to Saratoga Springs instead. It's an old resort town that apparently goes nuts for horse racing in the spring. Then going north from there, you could hit Fort Ticonderoga and take the ferry in Essex across lake Champlain into VT. In that part of VT, Shelburne Museum always gets a recommendation. I love that place.
