Texas Rest Areas

Recently stopped at the new rest stop in Van Horn, and man, it is nice. Someone there told me it cost 1.5 million per side of the highway. Was super clean, well landscaped, free distance binoculars (but it was night and I couldn't see anything), had an indoor A/C area with some maps, displays, and stuff. Hopefully people don't do what they always do and start breaking and defacing things.

I feel like over the last 30ish years Texas has really improved on its rest areas. About 30 years I remember my dad taking me to go hunting a bit West of San Antonio, near Kerrville. We stopped at rest area somewhere, and it was not only gross, but it was the first time I saw bathroom stalls where you could see and talk to the the person next to you as you went.

Y'all notice that too? Just an improvement in rest areas. Probably helps Texas tourism I'd imagine.

Just travel to rest stops in other states and you will really appreciate what we have.

I stopped there last week on my way home to Phoenix from San Antonio. Very much needed and very nice. If you're driving west Arizona rest stops are nice too.

I10 near Luling have the real nice stops for 10 plus years and they have stayed clean. Plenty of bathrooms. Keep lobby ice cold. Outdoor play grounds

Most of them have daytime maintenance and having someone on site and cameras outside helps with the vandalism

I stopped at one place in Arizona on I10. Was ok. But then cut down to I8, which is pretty barren till you get close to Yuma.

They've got a nice one Eastbound I-10 between the California State Line and Phoenix. Stopped there several times.

But yeah, Texas does pretty well.

Arizona also has a nice one Westbound on I-40 before you get to Flagstaff.

We have some nice ones. Also the ones between Hillsboro and Waco seem to be nice.
Also some nice onces just south of Salado.

FL does a good job as well. At least on the Turnpike.

I've started stopping at the ones in between Waco and Hillsboro as well. They are always clean and the amount of time I save stopping there vs. stopping at a conventional gas station in West or Hillsboro saves me so much time. Easy in and out for sure!

In East Texas, just north of Jacksonville, TX on US 59/69 Northbound, might be the best view in all of East Texas - Love's Lookout, AKA, Lookout Mountain Rest Area. Its a mini park/rest stop with clean restrooms and you can see for 30+ miles on a clear day from observation deck ....in East Texas!

I've seen the guest books at a bunch of places recently. Some with QR codes for them. I think it helps get them funding. The one I went to recently in Georgia asked where you're going, where you're coming from, and how many days you plan on staying in Georgia, as well as other comments. And next to the book it said something about signing it to help keep places like this open.

That's pretty advanced! the books in Knox county were basic day planners and some scribbling out of dates etc to get more entries on a page.

Rest stops still scare me since I saw There's Something About Mary.
