Always wanted to go but I don't want to be in Buenos Aires or Santiago to start out. Can that be avoided?

The options are limited - BA's AEP is the hub for most all Patagonia destinations. Same goes for Chile. Just time your BA / SCL arrival to have a same day connect to southern destinations.

Just about all international flights will first go to BA or Santiago. Only other way to get to Patagonia would be by ship. However I think you can fly from Falklands to Puerto Aranas, Chile.
This is how Falklanders get medical treatment as they cannot enter Argentina.
Is it really worth it?
