My son is on a Study Abroad and flies home this weekend. His flights are booked through United but his first flight is operated by Lufthansa and 2nd flight is operated by United. Does he check in online through his United app for both flights or does he check in on Lufthansa site since first flight is operated by them? And if he checks in with Lufthansa online will it also check him in on his connecting flight on United?

He should be able to check in on United, and it should check him in all the way. I've split itineraries between those two airlines, booking with United, and have not had any issues.

Checking in for the first flight should check him in all the way through. If he doesn't get both boarding passes, then he can check the Lufthansa site/app, but it shouldn't be necessary.

He should check in with United, it's typically who you booked through. But as mentioned above, any issues you can have him check in for both.

Booking airline will check you in. You may need to use the specific airline carrier's app to modify seats, depending on the airline.

Be prepared to check in with Lufthansa for the first leg. Each airline is different, but last two times I've booked American and had the first leg of the return operated by BA we've had to check-in with BA and then when we arrived at Heathrow had to check-in again (it was mobile) through American. When we attempted to check-in the night before on AA, it would not allow to check in for the BA leg. Not saying United is the same, just be prepared to have to do it differently than on the way over.

This is the correct answer, it depends. I booked on Delta from Croatia to TX last year and two of the legs were operated by KLM but I couldnt check-in through Delta's app, had to do it through KLM's.

So my son just landed this evening. Even though his flights were booked through United he apparently had to check in with Lufthansa since they operated his first flight which was from Marseille to Frankfurt. Then he had flight from Frankfurt to Houston operated by United. Lufthansa checked him in for both of his flights online and then he had to go to counter at the airport to actually get boarding passes. He was glad he had printed boarding passes though because mobile ones never showed up on the app.

I flew SW for the first time in a while the other day. Used to fly them 100+ segments a year but it's been a while as I don't really travel for work much anymore. Was just doing an up and back same day on Friday. Checked in on Thursday morning for Friday morning departure but when I got back to Love on Friday afternoon I discovered I wasn't checked in for return. Do you have to check in for all segments?

In this case yes, because one is a departure and one is a return. If you have a layover going somewhere, you don't check in for the layover, but you do check in for the first flight, and then when you come home.

Now that I think about it, I suppose it's not any different than any other flight. Fly out Monday morning and check in kn Sunday morning and then check in Thursday morning for a Friday morning return.

Just out of routine.
