How long do you want to ignore this user?

Been thinking about going to Abu Dhabi later this year (first week of December to be exact) for the F1 finale. Went to the Melbourne race in March so at least I know I can handle the 20+ hour travel (Austin to LAX then LAX to Melbourne).

Obviously I have not done any research yet as I am barely thinking if I can pull this travel, but it seems that leaving out of Houston would be the better move over Austin? What airline should I look at? Any promos or price discounts that tend to happen later in the year?

I'm not needy of first class or anything, i'm pretty small so I just book the basic seat.

I flew to Dubai a few weeks back via United through Newark (IAH is my home airport) as I wanted the points, but the Emirates direct is both cheaper and nicer of a ride - especially now that it is back to an a380. From the airport I took a hotel shuttle to Abu Dhabi but that is a long way (abt 80miles or 1hr 20min).

You can also find Etihad flights directly into Abu Dhabi airport. Probably best to fly Lufthansa to Frankfurt then connect over if wanting to fly from AUS. I think Lufthansa is flying the 787 from AUS and thats a decent ride...better than the old 747 out of IAH.

Google flights is my favorite for this - you can put both cities in at once. While a little higher, there are direct flights out of Houston.

I make the flight on semi regular basis from IAH. Best route depends on your goals…most points, minimize flight time / connections, lowest cost, most comfortable flight, arrival time (i.e not in the middle of the night), etc.

IAH - DXB is the most direct route and the A380 is a great plane with very good service, but need to make the drive from DXB to Abu Dhabi which is about an hour 15 min depending on traffic...but its an interesting drive and a taxi will take you to your Abu Dhabi hotel no problem for about $100. Also staying the night in Dubai can be a lot of fun if you have the time.

If want to fly United to get the points then will need to make a connection through NYC, LHR or perhaps FRA and fly Etihad the 2nd leg and Etihad is a very good airline. But United will be the most uncomfortable flight on the worst plane with the worst service compared to any of the middle eastern airlines…unless perhaps you fly Lufthansa which is equally as bad…and as a general rule its good to avoid German airports & airlines.

Qatar airlines through Doha is also a great route and plane with great service, but again it depends on layover time and cost. Could also take Turkish Airlines through IST, and spend a night in Istanbul going either way if you can as it is a fantastic city. Recently Turkish has been flying an older 777 plane on the IAH-IST route with a very poor configuration in Business Class, but the economy seats and service look pretty good.

You just need to look and see what works for you.

I've flown IAH to Dubai (had an onward connection) once on Emirates and that was honestly a great experience. I can't recommend it enough. Awesome plane, nice staff. 10/10.

In addition to Google Flights, I'd check kiwi.com. I've seen options there that are better than what Google Flights offers or options that Google Flights doesn't have.

Does seem like my best option is IAH to Dubai and then go to Abu Dhabi from there. I will probably fly back tuesday after the race to have a day off and rest before the travel back.

Any of the Emirates' airlines are great. I like Qatar but direct flights are always better. December is a good time to go. Summers are miserable.

Booked Houston-Dubai through Emirated Dec 1-10. F1 is from Dec 6 to 8.
My plan is to stay in Abu Dhabi from the 2-8, then move to Dubai on the 9th to rest from the race weekend/explore the city a bit, and come back on the 10th.
