This. The US side is nothing more than a state park. All the action is on the Canada side.

It's been 10 years, but agree with others on the Canadian side. Stay on a high floor at one of the hotels with views of the falls. I think we did the Hilton. I was very surprised by a tacky tourist feel of the area away from the falls- think Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. One of the highlights of our trip was two days in Niagara on the Lake. A beautiful lakeside town- very charming. The area is known for wineries so we did a few of those as well. If you have time, add in a trip to the Finger Lakes area of NY. Some really beautiful state parks iwith gorgeous water falls. I had never been to this area of country before and was just amazed at how pretty it was. We were in Cooperstown for a week in late July and never turned on the AC in our rental. Great weather. Have a great trip.

Yep, go check out Toronto, its a nice, easy drive from Niagara. Check out St. Lawrence Market while there. Obvious if you're into hockey at all the Hockey Hall of Fame is in Toronto. My son and I only spent half a day in Toronto so not a whole lot of recommendations, but I do recommend making that drive.

The Old Stone Inn is a nice place for dinner in Niagara Falls. It is also a hotel.

The Fallsview Hilton Hotel has just that - a nice view of Niagara Falls.

ETA: both are on the Canadian side.

Anyone take the scenic drive from Buffalo to Niagara along the river? Beautiful.

Agree with VBAg above - Canadian side much better but allow for crossing time in line.

Also HIGHLY recommend The finger lakes and Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Park. Lots of great hiking. If possible for Watkins Glen I would avoid the week-ends. There is a great sunset booze cruise you can do on one of the finger lakes. If interested let me know and I can get you the name.

Check the Artpark calendar - it's a great venue.

Old Fort Niagara is a short, pretty drive up the gorge. The little towns of Lewiston and Youngstown are really pretty that time of year, with a ton of historical markers along the river road (French&Indian war, 1812, revolutionary war and Underground Railroad stops).

If you like history Old Fort Niagara that overlooks where the Niagara River goes into Lake Ontario. I was actually a uniformed guard there one summer five decades ago.......hot wool uniform.

Maid of the Mist boat is nice boat ride to the foot of the falls.

Drive also Lake Ontario is great...miles and miles of orchards and grape vineyards. from Ft Niagara go along the lake to Wilson and Olcott park and down to the Finger Lakes. You could spend a week in and around the Finger Lakes.

Go to Watkins Glen state park and do the walk along the gourge...thank me later.

The finger lakes is some of the most beautiful areas in the country. There's a couple of evening cruises on the lakes you can take.

If you have the time go up to the Lake Placid area for a few days. Really, really nice area.

We rotate going to the Lake Placid area and the North Conway area every October during the leaf foliage color changes. This Oct for a change we are going back to Ouray, CO.

Thanks for the pointers!

Found myself up here this week for work, hoping to make it to the falls tomorrow.
