Anyone done this? Quick google appears only U-Haul truck available (sounds uncomfortable and expensive!). Any other options?
I'd love to fly to Anchorage and drive the long way back, but in a more reasonable vehicle.

Drive up to Washington and take the Alaska Marine Highway ferries from Bellingham to Whittier, AK and then drive down to the lower 48.

I've taken the ferry between Whittier and Valdez but I had no idea there was an option to go all the way to Washington.

There's a few ways to take a boat to Seattle area, with or without your car. I was going to bring one up and take the Ferry up, but it was not cheap as I recall....

Depending on the time and availability, it may be easier to buy something there and head south and resell.

I did not know they ran a ferry that far south. And that is a lot of time on a slow boat.

Sample Running Times
  • Bellingham to Ketchikan: 38 hours
  • Ketchikan to Juneau: 20 hours
  • Juneau to Yakutat: 17 hours
  • Yakutat to Whittier: 22 hours
  • Whittier to Chenega Bay: 4 hrs 30 mins
  • Chenega Bay to Kodiak: 14 hours
  • Kodiak to Homer: 9 hours

Note: The summer 2024 schedule will limited service the cross-gulf community of Yakutat, we also have reduced service to some Southwest and Prince William Sound Communities. We will not be able to provide Mainline service from Bellingham to Whittier this summer due to crewing shortages.

Drove the Alaska Highway in 1984, then took the ferry from Skagway to Prince Rupert, drove to Jasper and Banff, and even stopped at Yellowstone on the way home on an 8 week trip. Can't believe my dad did that. What a summer!
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough
