I am going to take the family (wife and two boy, 9&6) to go see the Astros play in August. Looking for ideas of things to do and places/towns to stay in for a few days before. We might fly into Provodence and then out of Boston.

awesome dad. Cant wait for my kids to get a bit older and take them to Fenway. It is magical for anyone who loves baseball.

We stayed at The Godfrey a couple years back and thought it was great with good location to most sites downtown and has a subway station around the block to take you to fenway. FWIW a lot of the visiting teams stay at the Ritz right down the street if you want to take a gamble in hopes of running into players in the lobby.

If it's your thing, Salem is a quick train ride away. Some cool museums that my 12 year old loved.
You can see pretty much everything in a day while walking.
Having said that, there's plenty to see in Boston

If you like baseball and are going to be in Cape Cod in the summer, consider the Cape Cod Baseball League. It runs from mid-June to early August. Players are Division I college players. Stadiums are small, intimate venues.

I recommend an Airbnb in Chatham. The beach during the day, lobster for dinner, and the Anglers under the stars at night.

Did a combo trip of Boston and Kennebunkport, ME for 4th of July a few years ago with the family.Flew to Boston and rented a car and drove to Kennebunkport. Stayed at Nonantum resort a few days, drove back to Boston and stayed a few more days, then flew home. Kennebunkport area is beautiful and lots to do.

We did New York to Boston to catch the Rangers on their New England road trip about 10 years ago.

My kids loved Martha's Vineyard. Pricey, we did 3 days.

Boston they really liked. We did the force march of the entire freedom trail. Going back we'd do the USS Constitution, Bunker Hill, and Old North Church, then maybe pick a few things around the Commons.

Spent last summer in New England and Cape Cod was one of our weekend trips. The traffic to and from Boston was a nightmare going out Friday and coming back Monday. BUT, we did a whale watching cruise and it was one of the highlights of our whole summer. Made the traffic worth it! I highly recommend, especially with kids that age. We'd done whale watching in Alaska before, but saw many more whales much closer in Cape Cod.

Bumping this! I was searching for things in the Boston area in October.

Husband has a work conference, so we are looking to tag a few days to the end of it and make a vacation out of it.

Any road trip or day trip areas near there would also be appreciated! I saw that Salem isn't far, so I'm putting that on the list. (Especially since we will be there the week before Halloween!)

Salem is the biggest tourist trap I've ever been to. We did a witch museum tour, and it was so bad we were laughing. They used dolls from Walmart for the displays. The guide had so many piercings she was hard to understand.

OTOH, Boston is awesome. Do the red line walking tour, North End, Chinatown, Little Italy. Make sure you go to the church in the North End.
The House of Seven Gables is 1/2 hr away. Gillette Castle is 2 hrs away.

My husband couldn't get away from the office and my two high school kids were on school trips last spring break, so I took my twin boys (14) to Boston. We had a great time - I highly recommend! It's deserted that time of year, from a tourist perspective, which was great.

My boys loved the Harvard Museum of Natural History - such cool taxidermy and the glass flower specimens are unparalleled. The tour of Fenway was amazing, too - we were not there during baseball season, not sure if tours are offered year round?

We also really enjoyed the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which is within walking distance of Fenway and is the site of the world's largest (dollar terms) art heist in 1990. There is a Netflix documentary that covers the event, and my boys watched it before our trip. The museum is as it was the day after the heist - there are just empty spots on the wall where the stolen art was lifted. It's pretty cool to see.

They also really enjoyed following the Freedom Trail - the whole, long trail - including climbing the steps to the top of the Bunker Hill monument. We did the Boston Tea Party experience/museum, which I thought sounded kind of hokey but was well done and fun.

We loved eating at Giaocomo's in Little Italy - we ate there twice. Also paid two visits to Mike's Pastry. A chain, but we really enjoyed Capital Burger (related to Capital Grille) for a casual dinner. Had lunch at Regina Pizzeria several times (they have a location near Fenway and the original in Little Italy - maybe more as well).

We stayed at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, which was lovely and very convenient to public transportation, Boston Common, etc.

Enjoy! It is so fun to share travel adventures with your kids!

Just took the family to Boston in late September. Great for history, architecture, coastal stuff. We also drove out to beautiful Western Mass to see the Shaker Village, up into Vermont and a day in coastal towns of Maine. The Mohawk trail is great for Fall color. Caught a Red Sox game at Fenway which was great. We sat up over home plate.
