Wife got us a cruise for Christmas. Out of Galveston. First time.

Best hotel to stay the night before? Ideally would have covered parking and let us leave the car there?

Alternatively, Best hotel to stay and then best covered parking option for car while on the cruise?

Cruise tips that we might not pick up from general online research?

TIA

Port of Galveston operates parking, covered and uncovered. It's pricey, but convenient with porters and shuttles to get your luggage on/off the ship quickly.

For a cruise this summer, it was only $20 more expensive to stay at a hotel in Texas City the night before we depart and use the expensive covered parking by the RCL terminal vs. staying in a hotel on Galveston Island that offered a shuttle and an extended parking option.

There are some hotels that offer free extended parking that I didn't look at too much.

Cruise Hotels with Parking

1. Cruise cabin walls are magnetic. These hooks are cheap and get stuff off the floor, especially if you're traveling with more than 2 people in a cabin.
https://www.amazon.com/MIKEDE-Neodymium-Refrigerator-Decoration-Workplace/dp/B0B65F8W77/ref=sr_1_3?crid=28YAQ35RNAFRD&keywords=magnetic+hooks+cruise&qid=1705440123&sprefix=magnetic+hooks+cruise%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-3

2. Excursions are less expensive if you book them yourself vs. through the cruise line. You have some risk of the ship leaving if you aren't back in time, but I've never seen this happen. Many of the excursions are so curated and overcrowded that we've gotten more enjoyment from paying nearly the same amount for more private experiences.

Did you get drink package? We have had it once time when it was a perk that we didn't pay for, but we don't drink enough to make it worth it. But...on our last cruise, at every port, my wife bought a bottle of wine. When you get back on the ship, you go through security, and when they see you have a bottle, they told us to go check it. Well... we just didn't. Each time we just left it in the bag, turned and went up the stairs, and they never stopped us. Then my wife just filled up a thermos cup and had her wine on the ship without paying the cork fees. It may not work, but it's worth a try. You can usually bring on one bottle per person, and drink it in your cabin for no fee. She brought the thermos cup to avoid any cork fees, and then got lucky when she found out they didn't really police bringing the bottles in from the ports.

Don't forget to bring a little extra cash for tips at the end. They collect tips automatically, but it's customary to give a little extra, in particular if you had the same waiter every night, and for your cabin staff. Everything else on the ship is cashless except the casino.

And I'd recommend breakfast in the dining room... it's much quieter than the buffet and most people use the buffet for breakfast, so it's the one meal you can eat in the dining room that won't crowded.

And my last tip, if you are kind of a geek like me.. one of my favorite things to do that very few people ever notice... when you leave port, a local captain will take the ship away from the port and out to open waters, usually just maybe a mile, maybe even less. So to get that pilot off the boat, a small faster boat will approach the ship, pull up next to it, and the captain and sometimes 2 people will jump from the cruise ship to the smaller boat. Sometimes it's an easy step, but sometimes if the seas are at all choppy, it's pretty exhilarating to watch. I try to watch every time I can.

Royal caribbean.

Texas city idea sounds reasonable. No particular reason to stay on the island for a night.

We have kind of taken the attitude that we will go ahead and get things through them this time to see and learn. As we really have no clue what to expect. So I believe we have purchased the drink package and booked some stuff through them.

Still not positive I will like it. Wasn't really all that high on my list of things to do. But trying to go into it with an open mind and hoping to find I like it. If nothing else, being disconnected and hanging out won't suck.

I always thought I'd hate cruises. I enjoyed it way more than expected.

I'd wake up early and get a run in on the track and a quick workout in. Think it helped get some energy out so I didn't feel bored and stuck, if that makes sense.

Everyone's different, but I'll say I don't really see how the drink package is worth it unless it's like a spring break college trip lol.

Did the Royal Caribbean from Galveston last year and loved it. Previous cruises were all on Carnival. Greatly prefer RC. Drink package on Carnival is restrictive and not a good value. Felt like it was on RC. We enjoyed booking the all inclusive day resorts and did a decent snorkeling in Honduras. Casino was a blast. If you see a tiny, flamboyant Chinese blackjack dealer named Wei, sit down. He is a blast. Did a special dinner at the Sushi/Chinese restaurant. Steakhouse was supposed to be good.

Wall hooks are a must have.

Also, poo porri. Seriously.

Yeah, we enjoyed the sushi restaurant. Our favorite meal was probably 150 Central Park.

Agree on the magnet hooks. We also used them on the ceiling and brought some curtains from home to make a bit of a room separator so our 2 year old would go to bed a little easier by not being able to see us.

If you like espresso drinks (lattes, etc.) the coffee card is worth it.

Granted I've only been once out of Galveston, but when my GF (now wife) and I went, we only got one non-alcoholic drink package. They weren't the strickest in checking the ID card with the sticker of who was on it (it was on my account), so we saved the $100 or whatever (I was in grad school and mostly broke).

While we didn't burn the place down with drinks, it did save some cash.

And 2nd on the bottle check. I brought mine in because I was being honest, but the 2nd time, I just went to my room and mixed with my cokes.

Don't try the 'water bottle with vodka' trick. They shake it and the surface tension difference in fluids means bubbles last longer in non-alcoholic water. That's how they tell.

I can tell you that with a bit of creative exacto knife work, removing mentions of "bourbon", "proof", etc, this bottle has passed through security as wine on 4 trips. Buddy tried it and got caught. Didn't do the exacto knife work as well. 2 bottles of 114.7 proof will help pass the time.

I didn't attempt on my last trip because we had the drink package

Funny story. Last time I smuggled this contraband I had 2 bottles in my backpack/Tac bag, TSA flagged me going through security. Apparently I had left a collapsible baton way down in the backpack someplace. Multiple TSA officers came by to assist and make sure I was not a threat. When they pulled it out, I gladly donated it to them and told them that I was really flattered by the fact that they thought I could take over a cruise ship with a collapsible baton Steven Segal style.

I put my bottles back in the backpack, collected my mortified family who felt for sure I was going to prison and boarded the ship.

Pretty sure everyone in a room together has to get the drink package to help prevent this.

This is true. We found a loophole. My wife and I were traveling with our teenage daughters. In our circumstance, we booked 2 rooms, one under my wife and one in my name with one of our kids in each room. Obviously, those arrangements were not actual. Because I was with a minor I only had to purchase one drink package.

Unique circumstances for sure. But, I love loopholes.

I read on another thread that the Galvez offers cruise parking with a stay. Never tried it, so do your own research. Don't stay in Toxic City. Just don't. Wasting a potentially fun vacation night to save $20 is foolish. Stay at the Galvez, Treemont or San Luis. I prefer the first two due to proximity to downtown Galveston.

What ship are you going on?

Other things I thought of:

  • Stay away from the windjammer buffet on Day 1 especially, but during any other major mealtime. Every ship I've been on it has been overcrowded. There are other meal spots (included in your fare) spread out across the ship.

  • You'll be assigned a specific boarding time, but you can also board any time after this. Your room may not be available to you until 1pm or later, so consider boarding later if you want to put your bags down before you grab lunch.

  • Put some upside down pineapples on your door if you want to make some new close friends.

Dude...

One other activity I just remembered. Took a guacamole making class onboard just for fun. I can make the guac. Had some cocktails and crushed some avocados. Served a good lunch with it. Beware, the host chose some guy from Arky as the winner of best guac. Obviously, they don't know stuff.

Just did Harmony of the Seas out of Galveston first week of 2024. I'm not a big cruiser either and it was a lot more fun than I expected. Lots to do on board. Kids loved it. The Fine Line aqua show is awesome and it gets booked up quick! Once you get on board you can start making reservations for shows, dinner, etc. Everything is on the app so book the stuff you want to see asap.

RC has the piano lounge singer do elevator music where he picks a random elevator on the ship each night and brings his piano and plays songs/requests all night. It was really cool.

Bring plenty of cash. On the excursions you'll want some cash for tips and if you don't have an all inclusive on that excursion they may not take credit card.

We went without the internet package and it was really great to be off the phones for a week. You can use the ship wifi for the app and message each other. We have free coverage in Mexico and used wifi in Roatan to check in, but it was great to have more intentional family time. I thought we'd be in the minority, but lots of people go without it.

I can say I never grew up in a cruise family and always have done more DIY vacations so I didn't think I would love a cruise, but better half's family is once-a-year cruisers at least. I've enjoyed the few I've been on with them but after a while they do get repetitive. Still, I've enjoyed them and can say I like RC a lot more than Carnival. If you're on Voyager of the Seas, it's a really cool ship and will make you want to see the other even bigger ships that are out there.

We have always used Lighthouse parking in Galveston. We've stayed at different Airbnbs and hotels night before the trip, one cute one was called the Oleander. We were able to walk down to dinner from there and it was really convenient. We will be using it again.

Similar to the guacamole class, if you like sushi, the Sushi class was actually pretty fun and worth the cost. More than enough for a good lunch. Booked for the first sea day and it filled up quick.

We usually go for the drink package when it is on 'sale' for 40-50% off if they do that a few months before the cruise. Our logic is, a mimosa with breakfast, a tiki drink by the pool, glass of wine with dinner, and a nightcap basically have you breaking even on cost, so it's nice to not have to worry about a big bill at the end of the cruise if it's already prepaid. I can say one or two casino nights with the server coming by every 30 mins can add up...

You can have the prepaid gratuities taken off your bill the last day of the cruise. We usually tip pretty generously to the people who serve us and our room attendant, (tip them the first day! they might go out of the way and do a little extra for you then instead of tipping them at the end.) so we don't feel bad about having the auto tips taken off. Some people might disagree because they say tips go to more than the people you interact with, but IMO I should only tip people I get direct service from.

If you are going to Cozumel and don't have plans yet, I can't recommend Buccanos enough. Cover charge to get in for the day that they apply to your food and drink bill and it's a great vibe. Not nearly as busy as other spots.

These work well. However, I fill them with rum.

Instead of bringing wine onboard, clean out a wine bottle and fill it with your favorite liquor and buy some PVC bottle seals on Amazon to seal the bottle with a hair dryer or boiling water. The cruise line sees cabernet, I see Freezer Door Old Fashioned. It's a great way to keep liquor in your cabin.

I think it's funny that almost everyone's best tips (me included) are about how to sneak alcohol on the ship. What's wrong with us.

The drink prices on cruises are ridiculous. Most liquor drinks are $12-$17 each.

The liquor on Carnival ships is watered down at least 50% if not more. I like to be able to add a non-watered down floater on top of my pina colada so it actually does the trick.

Absolutely nothing! Our "discounted" several weeks prior to boarding rate for all inclusive drink package was $1,300 total for my wife and I on RC. That includes the gratuity, but still. That was 8-9 drinks pp/day when 3 of those days I'm off the boat drinking all day for next to nothing!

Cruises get a bad rap but if you have the right frame of mind, they can be a blast. You just have to let your guard down a bit and enjoy some of the kitsch.

They are also a great way to get a quick look at lots of different places to see if you might want to return and stay awhile.

I've found it helps to have a big group. We've always cruised with extended family so there's always something going on. Also helps with excursions as you can split up easily.

We've done some great excursions on our cruises. The ones I remember the most had nothing to do with a beach or pool. For example, we took a cooking class in Cozumel that was awesome.

Here's the thing, I had way more drinks on Royal Caribbean than I did on Carnival. I don't know that they were actually counting.

Lots of good thoughts! Thank you!

Like I said, we got the drink package this time. Doubt we will mess with smuggling any in. Could see maulybe taking a wine bottle.

Does the drink package cover having wine at dinner?

What about motion sickness? Is that a big thing? Figured we would hit our doctor up for the patch thing just in case. Don't have a clue how to figure out if it will be an issue or not.
SupermachJM
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Wine at dinner up to a certain price is included, I've never had any issues ordering off the wine list.
Motion sickness shouldn't be bad unless you go through rough weather. Our first cruise was in December when a front was blowing through and the water the first and last day around Galveston was pretty rough, but I didn't have any issues. Others might.
Bluecat_Aggie94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not prone to motion sickness, and even some really rough seas didn't bother me one bit. If you have any issues, bring Dramamine.

And yes, as stated, you can wine with dinner with your drink package. I love the drink package if I can score it for free. Enjoy.
