My wife and I are going to Paris in March for 10 days. I have to go there for work, but we're going over about 10 days before to travel around France a little. We've been to Paris together before, but only got to spend a couple of days there, so we'll probably stay in Paris for 3-4 days to see the things we didn't see before and just hang out a little. We have one side trip planned to Normandy area and Mont Saint Michele. We're looking for probably one more side trip from Paris that could be up to 2-3 days, either by train or by car.

Does anyone have a particular city or region that you've been to that you would recommend. If by train, would prefer that it's accessible by the bullet train within 2-3 hours. We would plan to head there one morning, spend the day, stay at least one night, then head back to Paris either the second night or spend one more night and head back on the morning of the third day. If by car, would prefer it to be within a 3-4 hour drive from Paris.

I can't help, as I've only ventured to Normandy, but I can suggest staying in Bayeaux and seeing the tapestry. We went about an hour before closing and had it all to ourselves.

Bayeux is where we're planning to stay. Thanks for confirming that's a good decision.

Are you interested in snow? One option…You can take a direct train from Paris to Zurich…it's about 4hrs if I remember correctly via TGV LYRIA. You can then take a short train ride to various places such as Engelberg. If you are truly interested in something like that, let me know I can expand. I live over here in the Alps.

Is Versailles on your list, not sure if you would count that as a day trip.

Loire Valley and the Chateau Region. Chenonceaux, Chambord, Cheverny, are really fantastic.

Champagne Region NE of Paris. Moet Chandon and many more.

Burgundy. Dijon is 1.5 hours by TGV. You could stay there or in Beaune.

Should have specified, we have done Versailles on a previous trip. That's the only thing we did outside of Paris previously.

We stayed in Tours and Amboise last summer. Tours is easily accessible by train, easy to visit castles. Not super touristy and I think we just stayed at a Hilton. Awesome old town area with shopping and bars.

Versailles is cool. We lived in the UK and we made several trips to Paris. I was a big runner and ran a race that started at the Eiffel Tower and fished at the Palace of Versailles.

I second the Loire Valley. You can get to Tours in about 3 hours drive from Central Paris. It's a good base to drive around and see the chateaus. The best are Chambourd, Chenenceaux and Villandry. If you go there, also visit Abbey Fontevraud. The crypt of Henry II of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart is there.
