We have a week before school starts every year where there isn't any child care so we use the time for a family trip. We've had a great time the last few years and we're looking at options for next year.

Pertinent info: 7-8 days in mid August. Flights depart from a regional Midwestern airport so have to travel through a hub (Chicago, DFW, MSP, ATL most likely). Two boys, 7 and 10 years old. We all have passports but the kids are young enough that any flights 5+ hours (i.e. leaving the continent) would not be enjoyable. We love beaches but would prefer if there was something more than just the beach to do for the week we're there. My wife doesn't like camping so if we hit national parks then it would be from a nearby Vrbo.

Places we've been:
  • Lake Tahoe
  • Florida Keys
  • Outer Banks
  • Gatlinburg
  • Hilton Head

A few rough ideas we've had:
  • Pacific Northwest - likely a few days in Seattle to hit an aquarium, a children's museum or two, and the zoo. Take a ferry, train, or scenic drive to Vancouver Island area and do some hiking, a whale watching cruise, and maybe some beach time (even if it's just digging in the sand and some kayaking with the cold water).
  • San Diego - Legoland, Sea World, the zoo, the beach (same Pacific caveats)
  • Somewhere in Wisconsin and/or Michigan (Door County, Mackinac Island, or similar coastal town on one of the Great Lakes) - beach time, campfires, kayaking, see some sand dunes and national parks
  • Caribbean - likely somewhere with beaches, hiking, and some historic towns/forts to explore. Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, or similar. We don't love big crowds so a cruise wouldn't be our first choice.
  • National parks - lots of options. I've been to many of the majors (Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia, Grand Canyon, etc.) but I can't see finding enough stuff to do for a week if we're not camping.

I appreciate any and all recommendations even if we don't end up using them this year.

I'd do San Diego. Its a good trip for kids that age.

+1 for San Diego
Between SD and The OC, there is plenty to keep you busy for a week and avoid the nonsense that is Los Angeles.
Legoland
SD Zoo
Disneyland / California Adventure
Beaches SD / Laguna / Huntington
SD Padres Baseball
Angels Baseball

Side note - your kids are old enough to handle a long haul plane flight. But, they would get more out of Europe in a few years.

Also, as a Puerto Rican, I definitely recommend PR but, you've got to get out of San Juan. Spend a day or two there at most and then go rent a VRBO in Palmas del Mar.

WA beaches are pretty rough. They're beautiful, but you have to hunt for sand and a lot of the coast is private. OR, by law, 100% public and we have way, way more sand.

If your jam is big city, big mountains, striking coast, hopping islands; you go WA.

If the beach is the focus, OR coast wins and it's not close. I'd go:

Along the way you'll have lots of natural attractions: Thor's Well, Natural Bridges, Devil's Punchbowl, Devil's Churn. Some pretty famous breweries are on the coast as well: Buoy, Fort George, Pelican, Rogue, Public Coast, Breakside.

Can't believe Colorado hasn't been thrown out yet. Breck, Buena Vista/Salida, Durango all great options. Plenty to do: Hiking, river rafting, breweries, fishing, cool weather, etc. You could even do a day in Denver on your arrival and do Zoo or Rockies game.

When our kids were that age we flew into San Francisco and went to Carmel, Monterey Bay Aquarium (and the town for me since l love Steinbeck's novels of Doc), drove PCH to Halfmoon Bay and into Salsalito area and Muir Woods. Back to San Fran for Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Whale boat tour, Chinatown, Imaginarium, and more. It was a fun trip with lots to see and do.

Colorado is a great option. I would add Utah. Fly into Vegas, rent a car and hit the Mighty Five national parks
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

When my kids were a couple of years older, we visited several NPs without camping. We flew into Denver and went to the following:

  • Mt Rushmore/ Badlands NP/ Minute Man Missile (stayed in Rapid City, August may conflict with Sturgis Rally). Kids loved Badlands, tons of peaks and valleys they could explore and climb.
  • Drove by Devil's Tower on the way to Yellowstone.
  • 2 days at Yellowstone stayed at Grant's village in the park.
  • 3days in Jackson. drove through Grand Teton NP on the way and returned during one of the days in Jackson. They had a Old West Gun Fight in Jackson. We rode the gondola up at the ski resort and went on a rafting trip.
  • returned to Colorado to visit Estes Park and Rocky Mountain NP. Kids loved Alluvial Fan at Rocky Mtn NP tons of boulders to climb around the water fall. (Stayed in Loveland or Fort Collins can't remember).
