Right as we entered the basilica at Pompei today we heard a chorus of shouting from our left, at least 20 people, and heard "ok I'm sorry!" on our right.

To our right what this early/mid-20's idiot blonde ***** wannabe influencer getting down from a column where her boyfriend was taking her picture. The ibbwi also had her parents there watching.

The genetics of so much of the world need to be ended. Her parents clearly aren't any better for not trying to stop her.

If your kids are "influencers", shoot to kill now. Rip off the bandaid. Cut artery bait. If your kids reference influencers, create scars now as a reminder.

****ing idiots.

Here's the columns the idiot climbed on for a photo.

I have seen Mainlanders(Chinese) climb on teetering falling statues in Angkor Wat for that idiotic photo op. At least some sites now are banning selfie sticks.

I've noticed a pattern when I see a selfie stick creep into view. Their 20ish year olds hog a photo site where most people take 3 or 4 pics. The kids take it for 5 minutes while they pose and make peace signs at every degree of 360.

Im yelling at parked cars I know. I young enough to see too many idiots that aren't kids anymore. They're adults, they have degrees., they're f'ing imbeciles.

Idiocracy is a documentary.

call me ignorant.. but are there signs that say don't climb on the columns? Because otherwise I wouldn't think you couldn't get on them. I can totally picture my boys wanting to climb up and telling us to take a picture, because they pretty climb on everything for a picture, unless it's clear you aren't supposed to.

No there aren't signs posted everywhere, but every place has it posted outside ,when you get tix, any tour you go on whether one person or 50 - don't touch and if you have to climb it that means don't touch. Don't take souvenirs by knocking a piece off that looks loose, don't take just a fingernails scratch worth of paint, etc.

Climb on a column, start a crack, the next 100th person does the same and the crack grows, 101 takes it off as a souvenir.

It's all an open air museum. Don't lean on a wall of a room that was a 2000 year old fresco painted on the wall. It's just me, can't hurt? Not like every person is rubbing the wall in the same place.

They assume people are mature enough to know better. No offense meant, but put the fear of god in your kids if you think they'll do this, or just don't take them with you.

These are big examples, but you absolutely don't do anything that has a chance of causing damage.

They can absolutely fine you and throw you in jail. If anything it is the "know the rules of country" if your going to visit.

look, I understand leave no trace and everything else you've described there, but not everything is like that. We visited the 1000 year old cliff dwellings in mesa verde, and they literally guide you through them, touching, climbing on remnants of walls, etc.
So unless it says otherwise, I assume it's fine. Put a sign up, or a rope up, or whatever, because there are plenty of old things that authorities don't seem to care if you touch or walk on.

They should make some fake columns for people to climb on.

Not a bad idea. 5 Euro donation to access...money goes to local charity for children....everyone wins!

Some of the "ancient walls" may have been rebuilt at some point. Not sure about Mesa Verde, but I know that some ruins in Texas were rebuilt in the 1930s by the CCC

If the walls were rebuilt, the guides probably don't care what you do to them.

That being said, there are differences in how things are handled. We visited Monticello and the Harry Truman home in the same year. The former run by a private group, the former by NPS.

At Monticello we were given pretty free rein to go anywhere and touch most anything. At Truman, we only saw the first floor, were confined to narrow paths, the docent wore white gloves, and there were limited visitors per day

exactly my point. Unless advertised/posted otherwise, I assume things are safe to touch and walk/get on.

I remember someone trying to climb on the Big Buddha in Bangkok a few years back. Thai police were not too friendly with those influencers and hauled them off to jail.

We were at Butchart Gardens in British Columbia about five years ago. They have a sign out from that says "no selfie sticks allowed." I saw a couple of Japanese people in tears. Glorious moment!
