Will arrive Wed and staying downtown. Leaving Sunday for some time in mountains.

What to do in Knoxville? Food, things to see and/or experience.
What to do for the few days after. Probably look for somewhere near Pigeon Forge, but aren't committed here yet. Open to suggestions. Aren't interested in going all the way up into Kentucky for bourbon trail.

If you're a fan of Manhattan Project history, think about a trip to Oak Ridge. Good little museum there, and they are beginning to offer behind-the-fence tours onto the plant at Oak Ridge, to some WWII era sites.

It's interesting to drive around residential parts of town and see that lots of the 'temporary housing' that was built in the 1940s is still in use.

Have basically just driven through Pigeon Forge and thought it was highly commercialized. Also spent just a little bit of time in the Great Smoky Mountains Park and would love to go back when I had several days.

Here are some ideas...

- eat at Tupelo Honey and Stock & Barrel in the square
- Hangout on the deck at the preservation pub, also in the square
- Hike the Honey Creek trail in the Big South Fork Wilderness - this is a REALLY good hike
- In the GSMNP skip Clingman's Dome and Abram's Falls and instead head to Charlie's Bunion, Chimney tops, or anything in the Greenbrier area. Ramsey Cascades is also nice.
- Drive the tail of the dragon out and the Cherohala Skyway back. Stop and look at the stuff along the way. Let the motorcycles pass, don't be a jerk about it

We did totd last year. We stayed at topoco lodge after the auburn game and it was beautiful there. Wanting to see a little different area this time.

I like Tapoco lodge, well really I like the rapid below right after you go under the bridge. It is called Yardsale because people swim out of their kayaks all the time in it. Just upstream of the Lodge is another big rapid where 3 people have drowned after swimming out of their boats. It is just a bad recirculating hole.

That whole Cheoah river is fun, but awfully dangerous. I pulled out a drowning victim once in takeout rapid (she didn't make it) and saved a dude who ripped his face off in that river in Bear Creek Falls. Multiple skull fractures, 8-10 of his teeth knocked out, tons of stitches to his face. He was upside down, still in his boat, and literally unconscious when I grabbed him. I held him up as we went through a couple rapids and finally got him to shore. Nasty, nasty stuff. Blood and broken teeth everywhere.

That is the bad thing about kayaking. All these awful things I saw on that river but as I type I would love to be there again. Cheoah river kicked a lot of people's butts.

Anyway, back to the show. Enjoy Knoxville. Its a nasty little town
