Heading to Italy soon.

Looking to see if there are any apps for translating spoken words from English to Italian and vice versa.

And if there are any apps where you could snap a picture, of say, a menu or signage, and it would convert. Don't know if this is available or may be cost prohibitive but thought I would ask.

Figure there are a few of the 1si one above available, but looking for any suggestions from personal experience.

Grazie and ciao y'all

Google translate. It's free, does pictures, everything you're looking for. I use it all the time. I think you can download the language too and do it offline.

Here is an example of Google Translate in action.

Just point your phone toward any Italian word and it will translate in real time.

It's a very nice tool. Along with Google maps.

Not sure where you're going and if it's business or pleasure, but about 95% of the Italians I've interacted with in Pisa, Florence, and Rome are all fluent in English. You can expect the same in other major metro areas. If you're deep diving into Tuscany then drop that to about a 2/3rds will be fluent in English.
Most of the time they say they don't speak English, their English is still serviceable. They are friendly folks and I've never had problems communicating.

If you have an iPhone there is a translate app built into iOS.

Meant to add earlier, this was our 2nd trip to Italy.

And yes, while English is spoken/written in many places, the translator came in handy many times.

I used it often when reading a stone engraved tablet on the side of some buildings, some menus that were only in Italian, random shop signs, etc.

And the little old lady cleaning our AirBnB in Napoli, the Google Translate microphone translator worked great when trying to converse with her.

Thanks again all

Is a native speaker out of the question?
