hello,

like the subject says, my partner and I are going to be driving from Minot ND to San Antonio. We plan on taking 3-4 days to drive down and are looking for suggestion on hotels and whatnot on the way. I will have my car full of stuff (his too) but he has a 90lb GSD in tow and are going to looking for places to say that a) is OK with dogs and b) less chances of our cars being broken into.

Thanks!

Why leave beautiful Minot for San Antonio?
Kidding.

Freezin's the reason…

It's in the 70s today…would be nicer if Canada wasn't on fire

Yeah the smoke is bad. Been up there for work in Fargo, Sioux Falls had it too.

I've made that drive (kind of) a few times. We traveled from Dallas to Williston about 8 years ago with 2 kids and 2 dogs. Took 3 days and it wasn't too bad.

We stayed in KOA Kamping Kabins in Topeka, KS and Mitchell, SD. You'll need sheets, pillows, etc and will use shower rooms but it's not a bad trip.

We did it during Sturgis and took the back way from Mitchell to Williston, through Pierre. Pierre is a very small town for a state capital. Not much scenery any way you go but it isn't a bad drive.

We might just stay on the Air Force bases…less if a chance to get our cars broken into…

The good news is that in San Antonio, you won't have to worry about stuff getting stolen from the vehicle, they'll just take the vehicle as well.

As a family who has done lots of road trips with our dogs, do your research here.

We are marriott people, and every marriott hotel has dog info in the same spot on the hotels website.
For example, if you search lincoln, you get a list of hotels.
Click hotel details which opens a new window, then click hotel website, for example;

https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lnkcy-courtyard-lincoln-downtown-haymarket/overview/

scroll down to hotel info section, it says no pets allowed. Done, easy, move onto the next one in the search list

lets say this one
https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lnkts-towneplace-suites-lincoln-north/overview/

it says pets $25 up to 45 lbs. Obviously that is tricky.. you have a 90 pounder.
We've breached the weight limit plenty of times with no issues, the trick is obviously don't bring it in the lobby, and furthermore, have someone check in, find the room, then go park near the nearest exterior door to your room, and use that exterior door to go in and out with dog.

Pay attention to fees (assuming you don't want to lie about having the dog), as some hotels have very high non refundable pet fees, like I've seen $200.

another example
https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/lnklc-fairfield-inn-and-suites-lincoln-crete/overview/

pets allowed, $75 non refundable fee.
This has no weight limit, so if you're looking to be completely honest/transparent, this might be the winner. A bit more of a fee, but at least you are totally compliant. Many times, they don't ask if you're traveling with pets at checkin, so you could take the approach of not offering up the info, and maybe you save the fee. But if they ask, or see the dog, you are more than happy to pay it.

Just above the hotel info section is featured amenities, and that's where I find out if there is a pool, which is usually a must with our kids, and if there is a free breakfast buffet, which is a big plus, or a continental breakfast, or nothing at all.

Would be nice if Marriott added a pet/dog filter to their website.

+1 on the point about variable pet deposits

Hampton inn's tend to be pet friendly also, with fees. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the website but there is a website dedicated to listing pet friendly hotels.

Bring Fido is the website for dog friendly locations. Even the same brands will vary in a town, so just because one doesn't allow dogs, another might.

I don't do it often, but I have traveled with my 90 GSD/Belgian Malinois mix and was able to find decent places with no added fees with a little searching.

Also, Google Maps does have a pet friendly filter for hotels. Use that, then check the hotel's website to verify that they're really allowed and what restrictions are in place.

Expedia lets you filter by pets vs not allowed. I tend to find Best Westerns or Holiday Inn Express's allow dogs.

Bring Fido also has an app.

Website or app, Bring Fido is a good place to start. Be sure to call the location you're interested in to check if they still allow dogs. I've found that sometimes Bring Fido's info is outdated.
