Looking at taking the family next July, but the range of options is kind of overwhelming even for a seasoned international traveler. Any help or personal recommendations would be highly appreciated.

I had clients book one last year. You are right, there are a lot of options out there. They would looking for a more luxury experience (and very last minute) so it helped narrow down their options. They had the time of their lives. I would be happy to help if you want, email is in my profile.

I've done Zambia, Serengeti, NgoroNgoro Crater, Arusha, Botswana, HluHluww Umfolozi ( ?spelling) and private camps outside of Kruger in SA. In my mind, the private game camps outside Kruger are the best experiences. You pay a lot, but you get a lot. Including the ability to go off road and go out at night.

What kind of shots and malaria meds do people take for these trips, or do they not think about, or just decide F'it?

Depends on the location. Some areas have Malaria, some don't.

The vendor I worked with gave a required list. I think it was 1 or 2. My clients scheduled and got them done at Scott and White.

We did ours in Kruger. We did both night and off road. You just have to pay extra for the experience.

Almost 40 years ago I went on a two week school field trip to Kenya.

Amboseli was where we got to see a Cheetah kill, Lions humping and an amazing amount of wildlife.

The Flamingos at Lake Nakuru we're amazing and seeing the Great Rift Valley was impressive.

Saw a massive herd of Elephants at Tsavo.

Of course bought souvenirs from Masai tribesmen. Those guys were putting 35mm film canisters in their ears before it was cool.

We did 3 weeks last year in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. We went with AMA Waterways. It wasn't cheap, but the lodging and safaris were top notch. I would HIGHLY recommend using a travel agency or going with a group. Traveling between countries can be very tedious and it was nice to have someone there walking us through everything. For example…when we went from Cape Town to Namibia we had to go through 6 immigration checkpoints, one of which was a tiny shack on the river bank.

The highlights were Kruger National Park and 4 nights on a river boat on the Chobe river between Botswana & Namibia. We went on twice daily zodiac safaris that were incredible.

We stayed at Tintswalo Safari Lodge in Kruger and I would highly recommend it.

For Chobe, there are several really nice lodges along the river that I would look at. According to our African guides, Botswana is the best run country in Africa.

On vaccinations: we got Hep A and Typhoid fever. We went in September (dry season) so we didn't do any malaria prophylaxis. We only saw mosquitoes in Zimbabwe near Victoria Falls and we were vigilant with our mosquito spray while we were there.

This is a life changing trip that I definitely want to do again. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I stand corrected in such case. When I did it in the past, such was my understanding

I visited Kruger Park and that was probably one of the best adventurous ever. Highly recommend
Our first plan was to go to Maldives, but changed the plan shortly before the departure. Still checking how to get edreams refund on this website and if that even possible in general.

African Dream Safaris. Top notch company. They only do the Serengeti. Wife and I did a private guide - 1 guide and vehicle for entire time. They don't own the lodges so you stay I lodges or tents where the migration is at the season you pick, rather than driving long distances like you may if your company owned a lodge on the "wrong" side of the migration.

We did a Tauck trip about 6 years ago - "South Africa, an Elegant Adventure". Absolutely fantastic trip. Saw the big five in two different game preserves. Victoria Falls was amazing. Guides were fantastic. Lodging was outstanding. The elephant orphanage was very interesting. Visited a school and the surrounding village.

Looking at going with Micato, which I think is the finest African trip supplier, for a migration trip late next summer.
