Looking for ideas to take family (kids 6 &9) to see snow for Christmas. My initial idea is Breck or Vail/BC, Winter Park, Red River NM or Park City Utah (maybe). I'd liked to introduce my kids to skiing but knowing them, they would probably just want to make snowmen majority of the time. We live in Houston so I've never driven in snow so would probably just hire a shuttle to take us.

My initial TexAgs research seems to recommend Ref River as family friendly small town.

Also open to other recommendations with one caveat that we are flying Southwest. Thanks.

ETA- added Park City Utah as 4th idea on the list

Fly into Montrose and take a shuttle like Alpine Express to Crested Butte. There is a great shuttle system between the mountain resort and the town of crested butte, so as long as you pick lodging near a shuttle stop, you won't need a rental car.

For their first trip you can't go wrong with red River at that age.

For Breck you can fly into Denver and Epic Mountain Express or another service to Breck or Vail

You can also fly American or United directly into EGE for Vail/BC

For Southwest and you can fly into Haden for SS or Montrose for Telluride or Crested Butte.

If you're worried about the weather, Hayden to SS or Ege to Vail/BC are your best bets.

Also, if you do book the trip, make sure to get Epic Day Passes. They're 50% off the normal window price right now.

Christmas is still early season for snowfall, so I'd go somewhere that has solid snow making equipment just in case.

Yeah, but Red River (or most of NM for that matter) can be a bit spotty for snow early in the season some years. If snow is the goal, I would pick a Colorado destination.

Red River is a ski mountain, there will be snow even if it is fake.

This. It's also cheaper than the summit county places like Breck. And since this is for the kids, they won't know the difference between good snow and bad snow. So if snow is the goal, I would lean toward the simplicity and ease of red river. Don't get me wrong. I love Breck and Colorado.

We took a Christmas trip to Telluride a few years ago so now I am ruined for any other ski mountain.

Not always - sometimes at Christmas RR is almost bare. Specifically thinking 2013 and 2017. El Niño usually helps that region.

On the ski runs. If he wants to make a snowman with the kids, ski patrol might frown on him doing it inbounds.

I would also recommend Granby Ranch, very family friendly ski resort and 20 min from Winter Park. My girls are 8 and 9 and learned to ski there these past 2 years. Ski school was great and my girls really got great instruction. There are a lot of condo options that are ski in ski out. Or course you can email me as my contact info is in my bio

If you like Telly, you should hit Snowmass in CO and Grand Targ and Jackson Hole in WY.

After thinking about it - why not Wolf Creek? Most snow in CO and an easy drive from TX. If you're going to drive to RR for suspect conditions, you might as well drive the extra 3 hours to get to the best conditions in CO. Plus south fork has tons of housing options.

My fav hills in CO are Highlands/Snowmass, WC, Purgatory, Telly, and the Vail BB on a powder day. We typically avoid Eldora, WP, and anything in Grand or Summit County due to the crowds and quality of the skiing.

The problem you're going to run into w Granby Ranch is that snowmaking only covers 65 of the 406 skiable acres. Otherwise for the price, it's probs one of the best beginner hills in the state. It's a great place to learn before moving into the steeper grades.

If you're going late December you really want a solid snowmaking operation or somewhere like WC that gets massive amounts of snow: think Vail Resorts, Alterra, Aspen Ski Co, Telluride, Purgatory or WC.

Just as a reference point, we usually aren't anywhere near full open by Christmas. Sans last year (snowmaggedon), the normal first round of heavy snow rollers hit the week before Christmas and stay through the first week of January. Sometimes we get hit early for Thanksgiving but that snow usually doesn't last. Meaning the snow isn't really starting to take shape until Christmas at the earliest because the Christmas storms are what's used to create the base outside of the early season upload area.

Two years ago at Telly you were still skiing the ribbon of death until the week after Christmas when we got slammed until just after New Years. You really never know but El Niño typically results in about 4-5 inches of greater accumulation that normal or La Niña years. Doesn't mean it'll happen but SW and Central CO usually do better in El Niño than northern CO.

We did a bucket list trip for my mom in Breckenridge a few years ago for Christmas.

One of my favorite vacations.

Yes to this. Good idea. Years ago I was going over the Rockys, snowing. Barely moving. People were passing me like I was driving 30 mph. And I was. I wanted to yell at them, "Can't you see the Texas plates?"

Edit: You may not see snow or maybe too much of it. And you can't get there by Southwest...but Christmas in Europe is wonderful. It is what Christmas is all about. The Christmas markets, decorations, all of it. New Year's, go to Prague.

Christmas markers in Europe is definitely on our list but I only have the week of Christmas and from what I've researched, majority of the markers end around Christmas Eve

They go through New Year's.

And another edit: My wife and I go every year. Except the Covid years. I have not seen any place close the markets until a few days after New Year.

Sorry, not trying to attack you because I understand the logic behind your post, but this made me laugh as a "peak Texags" post. OP says I just want my kids to see snow for Christmas and we want to go somewhere we can fly Southwest. And the response is "You can't fly southwest to get there and you may not even see snow, but you need to go to Prague for Christmas"

Suggestions for the future. And it is Prague for New Year's. I get the Southwest thing. He understood. Notice the response. I have seen snow in London, Berlin, Estonia, Munich, Prague and Moscow. You never know. I forgot, Zurich.

Yeah yeah, we get it, you have been all over Europe and it is clearly WAY better than anything in the US. And yet none of that is relevant to what the OP was asking for. I said in my post I understand why you made the suggestion and wasn't attacking it. But clearly, just like every other Texags stereotype, you are trying to make it into something it isn't. Bravo!

Dude, making humor about something that is stereotypical on texags (providing an overpriced idea that doesn't match anything the op requested) is not an attack on you. It is just funny because it happens so often. I specifically went out of my way to say that I understood your suggestion for what it was and was not attacking it. You have reacted with another texags stereotype with the bowed up I have been all over the world and know better than anybody what he should want response. That is fine. You have most certainly got more experience than I do with Europe because I have never been there. And that has nothing to do with what the OP asked about. He wants to fly on SW to see snow with his kids.

Just lighten up a bit man. With only 280 posts over 3 years on Texags, you probably haven't grasped the nuances of some of the humor around here, but I really wasn't trying to attack you, I promise. Just poking fun at something that always happens on threads asking for suggestions.

If you think the issue is that we don't understand your suggestion, you are the one who doesn't get it. And none of your F ing business whether I do or don't tell Texags whether I donate or not. And fyi, that is another common flex on texags. Look at me! I donate more than you, that makes my posts more important! You are kind of ticking off all the stereotypes one by one.

We've done Christmas in Park City four times in the last nine years and I'm still not tired of it. There is more than enough stuff to do for non-skiers. We start with a couple days of ski school right when we arrive (mostly for a refresher since we only only ski in December and March) and then the rest of the trip we mix in ski days with stuff like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, tubing, shopping, at home days to rest, play board games, bake cookies, etc.

Driving is not something you need to be worried about in PC it is such a quick and easy drive from the airport and they keep the roads in excellent shape. In probably 10 trips total, there has only been one time I was actually worried while driving and it was at night in blizzard conditions driving from Soldier Hollow back to PC. Other than that, I've never had an issue.

I would not recommend relying on Uber to get around - in my experience, the wait times can be ridiculous. But my favorite tip is to take an Uber from SLC to the Enterprise location at Kimball Junction and pick up your car there. I've saved thousands by doing this at Christmas - doesn't make a huge cost difference in March.
