I've never purchased travel insurance for a trip before as I believe where there's a will there's a way (have driven from DFW to steamboat after they cancelled all flights out of DFW before). But, I'm gearing up for an 11 day multi city trip to Singapore and the Maldives in a few weeks and am a little out of my element.

For you frequent overseas travelers, do you carry trip and/or additional medical coverage for longer international trips? If so, what minimum amount of coverage do you carry?

A few years ago I started getting TI if I left the country. I use Allianze. They have several to choose from. I was buying it primarily for medical insur & evac. I did however file a claim once when a tropical storm hit Cabo. I had no problems w/my claim.

I have used world nomads for longer trips - unusually several months. They are more inclusive-health, trip delay, lost luggage, etc.-and less pick and choose. I have had to file for two things ever- a ferry delay in Greece and a visit to the doctor in Iceland for a sinus infection- and they paid quickly and with little fuss.

Guy I know is currently on bucket list safari in S. Africa with father, uncle, son and was involved in a 20+ car pile up where he ended up with broken/dislocated hip requiring surgery and will require 14 days recovery before travel, father badly cut requiring surgery, uncle rib injuries and thankfully son just bruises. Thankfully they bought coverage through AIG Travel Guard and said they had been on top of things for them. All that to say, it feels like you never use/need it, but when you do man it's worth it. I'll never go international without it after seeing their experience.

We use AAA trip insurance for more expensive vacations, especially if they involve flights. Only a few hundred dollars that can save thousands and take the burden off you when things go wrong. I wouldn't dare go out of the country without it.

I started a post a few weeks ago specifically about insurance. You want something that is primary, not secondary. Primary pays first. Secondary you have to file with your own insurance company first.

The company I always use for myself and clients is Arch RoamRight. It is primary coverage. And if you don't need cancellation protection, it's even cheaper and just provided medical and on trip coverage. Feel free to message or email me.
