Heading to Bend, OR in July with the family (12 and 10 year old). We have never been but intrigued by what it has to offer. Any specific first hand experiences/recommendations? We are pretty outdoorsy, adventurous, etc…

Thanks!

It's my favorite place in America.

I live in Portland and currently in Bend for the week with the wife and 4 year old. I'm personally here once a month and take the fam every few.

I'll repost more later, because we're spent: I summited South Sister to ski the morning and met the fam at Devil's lake to swim/kayak, and then we looped Phil's on the MTBs for a few hours. Just finished dinner at Podski food carts (oysters and Thai for us; grilled cheese for the little).

What's your interest?! Ski, hike, camp, fish, unique stuff, mountain bike, city, food, surfing?

We are into golf, hiking, being in/around water, food/drink, biking (but not mountain biking), music, etc.

Thanks!

Look at Sunriver Resort for a few days. Did 5 days there in July a few years ago and it was awesome. Rented a house in the community (" on property") and played 5 rounds of golf.

Frost delay with a 730 tee time… shorts and polo by the time we were done.

Water park for the kids and bike rentals. Observatory was cool also. We went into Bend a few days also.

Lava fields and tunnels are cool. The kids will like that. Sunriver is about ~10 miles south of Bend.

What courses did you play and thoughts on them?

All 3. Liked them all. Crosswater, meadow, woodlands. Shot my lowest round ever on Woodlands and 3-putted 18

Literally all, seriously every one our friends with kids in Portland spends a week at Sunriver to Choppin's point. It's not our jam, but it's south of Bend and you could spend a week just on the property. Those who go like to golf, they putt around the bike trails and chill at the "SHARC."

We prefer to stay in Bend or camp.

Loding:

In Bend:

Activities (Bachelor / Cascade Lakes / Newberry):

Activities (Sisters / Santiam / Smith)
  • Smith Rock, it's fine; Sisters, it's Texas, but in Oregon
  • McKenziePass - will open at some point to cars in July. It's an all-time bike ride when closed to cars (https://traveloregon.com/things-to-do/outdoor-recreation/bicycling/mckenzie-pass-scenic-bikeway/). You start in high desert Ponderosa Pine forest, hit lava fields around Mt. Washington, crest to the Sisters for unreal views and descend into dank, damp, typical PNW dougy firs in Willamette National.
  • The one must in my book: Blue Pool ( https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/willamette/recarea/?recid=82063 ). Head up to Santiam Pass and into Willamette Nat. Hint: at the trailhead, game theory plays out that everyone grabs the first spot to parallel park (this or nothing mentality) and there's always parking at the trailhead. Will save you 20 min. of walking. The hike is lava rock and massive firs, the pool is simply unreal (deep blue, cold and amazing clarity). It's the start of the mighty McKenzie and blows my mind every time.

RangerRick compiled an excellent list so I am just going to tag on his.

I will start by saying it will be PACKED in Bend over the 4th. You will need to make reservations now if you want to hit the nicer restaurants.

Doing half of these would be an extremely BIG day, but it would be epic and you would need to start early. You will go through Sisters on the way. So here is a Sisters, McKensie pass loop.

  • The McKensie Pass is open to travel. McKensie pass If you want to make a loop. I am putting the route in clockwise order.
  • Start with the pass. Stop at the Dee Wright observatory at the top.
  • Proxy Falls Hike - 1.7 miles RT in a loop\
  • Belknap Hot Springs. Belknap Hot Springs It is a cool stop and you can just pay to get in them for an hour or so.
  • Blue Pool -
  • Salehie falls - quick short stop - highly recommend that you walk down from Salehie to Koosah falls. Very short hike but extremely scenic. I have done the hike from Koosah down to the Blue Pool but don't recommend. Once the Mckensie drops into the lave tube, it is just a forest hike until it emerges again at the Blue Pool.
  • Clear Lake - rent a row boat and just cruise around this crystal clear unbelievably cold lake. Perfect for families. If you only stop for 15 minutes, it is cool to see it.
  • Head of the Metolious - this off the road a few miles. The Metolious river emerges from the ground and starts a great fishing river. The general store downstream is a nice stop for a drink and a snack.
  • Wizard Fish Hatchery - down the road past the Metolious - make sure you feed the fish at the big pond
  • Dinner at Black Butte Ranch - they just remodeled the main lodge. Unbeatable views of the Cascades.

My picks if you need to narrow the list:
- Salehie to Koosah and back
- Blue Pool
- Clear lake (even in for 15 minutes) you are too close not to stop.
and then pick a couple from the above list.

For golf, it really depends on where you stay. Everyone has their preferences, but to me Crosswater is top of the list. Unless you know a memeber, you HAVE To stay at the Sunriver Resort to play it though. It was home to the NCAA men's championships and the Senior Traditions tournament. Very few homes. Just golf and nature.

Bend Options:
  • Pronghorn - Nickalaus is open to the public. Fun track through the high desert. Good views and lots of lava
  • Tetherow - this used to be an amazing setting for golf but now there are homes all over it and they require a caddy. It is still a quality track, but has lost some of it's appeal. If you are never going to go to Bandon, then sure, play it. It is fun to play links style. But for the money, I would save links golf for Bandon and play one of the other courses.
  • Widgi is also a good option and a little more reasonable. You will use every club in your bag at Widgi. It is not just a driver off the tee box course.
  • Whatever you do AVOID River's Edge Golf Course

  • Sunriver's Meadows and Woodlandss courses and Black Butte's Glaze and Big Meadows will all feel very similar. They are solid resort golf tracks. You don't have to stay on site to play these and sometimes you can pick up a deal on GolfNow.

Bend is a great food cart town. Best are:
- The Podski food trucks
- Bevel Brewing food trucks (gets less crowded as most tourist stick to the West Side of Bend)
- On Tap Bend - good for music and also avoiding crowds - on the East Side of Bend
- The Lot - Bend's original food truck lot

Galveston Ave - is also a good spot for food. Ten Barrel Brewery's original location. Sunriver Brewing and several other restuarants. One block frm the lot...

July 4th - fireworks off of Pilot Butte. You can see these from all over town and it is normally a great show.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I live in Bend and always enjoy helping Ags out.

Good luck week of the 4th with Santiam/McKenzie ! The construction on 20 blows on normal days. All the yahoos with travel trailers ignoring the no turn signs backing everyone up for miles is going to be peak in 2 weeks.

And then there's Sisters' traffic which is always a grind for inexplicable reasons.

I say all that knowing that we're 90% a lock to be in Bend that week contributing to the chaos. But 100% going 26 through Hood and down.

Yeah, Bend has grown by 40K since we moved here. Add in 20-25K visitors a day in the summer along with another 10-15K second home owners that come for the summer and you get traffic. It is still not "big city" traffic and can for the most part be avoided (off peak travel times and alt routes), but yes, it definitely something to consider.

If you come over, shoot me a message and I will buy you a beer. Gig'em!

How'd the week go?

We bailed for the coast with the heat. Camped in Cannon Beach for a few days. I MTB'ed Post Canyon and Sandy Ridge around some Hood River / Lost Lake visits, but the smoke from the Tunnel fire was tough.
