Edinburgh....double check your plane tickets

Beautiful city....the Scots are just salt of the earth good people.

The Castle is great....try to get a tour. They fire the cannons at certain times of the day so thats fun for the kids.

I don't know if the Hibs or Hearts are still playing, but might be worth checking their schedule if you have any sports fans in the family.

If you rent a car to go out and explore outside the city, rent it at the airport rather than in town....it's a lot tougher to get used to the driving on the outskirts of town than in the city proper.

St Andrew's is not a far drive....there is a putt putt just off the edge of one of the fair ways that the kids might like....if you do that, Anstruther's Fish & Chips in Anstruther (on the way) wins all the "best of" awards for theirs. There is also an old WWII underground bunker you can tour somewhere between Edinburgh and St Andrews.

There is a super old Joke Shop on the High Street that I went to as a kid and we took our kids to when we were there....loved by both generations.

Hiking Sir Arthur's seat is lovely if you want a hike (or "walk" as they say)

Get some ice cream and sit in Princess Street Garden to eat it.

Climb to the top of Scott Monument

You can visit the Whiskey Experience....not super family related but nothing bad....kids can learn the science behind it.

You can do High Tea at the castle which was pretty nice but definitely need a reservation. Also recommend the Literary Pub tour run by a couple of guys who have been doing this for a decade plus. Meet in the Haymarket at a pub and the group walks to 3 or 4 more pubs where there do skits describing Edinburgh's great literary history. It's pretty funny, a great way to get a feel for the city, it would be good for the kids before they get into English lit in high school, and it gives you a chance to visit 4 totally awesome local pubs. I can't remember the name of the tour but I'm sure you can find in via Google.

Highly recommend doing a ghost tour. Maybe a little touristy, but the guide I had was super enthusiastic and told great stories.

Oh, I forgot about those. We did one when I was in middle school and my family still jokes about "jumper-ooters"

That's where I learned about the black plague

On a more dark note, and I dont know if this is still open - its been nearly 30 years since we went - but there was a Edinburgh Dungeon museum of some sort where it replicated castle dungeons. As a 13 year old and a 9 year old (my age and my brothers age at the time) it was terrifyingly interesting.

Are you saying I'm as easily entertained as a young teenager? Haha. The dungeon thing sounds cool.

Haha, oh no....it's a joke that runs through the whole family - no age restriction there....my mom, my brother, my aunt, my cousin!

Rosalyn Chapel featured in the Da Vinci Code is very interesting and beautiful. National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery are both good.

Been once and really want to go back. Make sure you eat some haggis with neeps and tatties and a nice whisky. Good stuff (just ignore what you're actually eating in the haggis.

Also lots of JK Rowling / Harry Potter connections in Edinburgh as she apparently wrote most of the books (or maybe just the first one) there.

Sterling Castle and the William Wallace monument is about an hour train ride from there. Seeing a non-capital castle in Scotland is cool.

2nd Arthur's Seat. Amazing view of the city.

Ate at this place called Oink! On High street (or close to it). Good cheap.

Grass market if something is going on. Main park near castle for tea.

Holy rood palace in addition to the others?

We are tossing around the idea of heading that way to go to the Open Championship next summer at royal troon.

Obviously we'd like to stay in Edinburgh several nights, and with the tournament in troon we'd most likely spend a night or two in Glasgow. I'd also like to visit St. Andrews. I know there is a train from Glasgow to Troon, but for the other half of the trip (Edinburgh/St. A) is a rental car needed or can all be done by train?

To get to St Andrews you can get a train from Edinburgh to Leuchars and then take a 15 min taxi ride to St Andrews. This works pretty well, but it a taxi straight from Edinburgh to St Andrews is quicker (about 1 hr) although more expensive.
