Headed to Cairo soon and looking for some good recommendations. I've been to the Giza pyramids, the old Egyptian Museum and the Hanging Church, so looking for other things to see in my off time. Also thoughts on great local restaurants and nice bars with a view of the Nile, etc would be great…and any recommendations for golf courses in case I get an afternoon off.

Never been, but our son has it on his bucket list. Will be following to see what you come up with.

To contribute, maybe check out one of the high-end travel planners like Abercrombie & Kent and see what sort of special experiences they have, then plan on your own.

For instance, we are headed to UK this summer and my bucket list tour is the behind the glass Churchill war rooms tour with the museum director. If I were in in Egypt, you bet your arse I would pay for whatever VIP / behind the scenes tour they offer.

I find those to be a great way to not just visit museum, but to truly learn.

Based on what you have seen, I would recommend going to see Saqqara pyramid which is about 45 minutes south of town. In town do the Khan Al khalili which is the market in old Cairo. I don't know if or when the new museum opens. Other spots are the Citadel that has a big mosque at top and the civilization museum that has a bunch of the royal mummies in it if you are interested.

I think restaurants will depend where you are staying. A lot of the big hotels downtown will have nice restaurants bars looking over the Nile. Across from downtown is Zamalek which has a lot of restaurant barges and bars on the Nile. A lot of options there.

I haven't played golf but heard there are nice courses in New Giza and New Cairo.
