Anyone have any ideas, suggestions for Hollywood, FL? Heading there this summer with the family and wondering is the area pretty safe near the beach? What fun touristy things are there to do? Any good restaurants? Any fun places for kids? Great excursions you've done? TiA!

Well, this doesn't make me feel very good. I looked at the safety of the area and it was good on violent crime statistically. Is anyone familiar with this area? Is this just a one off from the Memorial Day holiday weekend?

Do I need to cancel this trip and go elsewhere?

i heard about this incident and immediately thought of this thread......

i wouldn't recommend a change of plans for you.......the area is very nice and is surrounded by high dollar properties with mainly friendly locals & tourists.....i occasionally head to Fort Lauderdale for work and we go down to Hollywood.....i've never felt unsafe or experienced anything like this.....

i'd say this is just another one-off by another outstanding member of society.......

Totally agree, that was likely a "one-off". That area is safe.
I have inlaws who live in BalHarbour, very close by. It's funny that Le Tub above was mentioned, that's one of their favorites.
If you get a bit of time away from the kids and want to do some gawking, take the wifey to Carpaccio's for lunch and get an outside seat. Watch all of the Ferraris and Lambos pull up, and make note of the age discrepancy between the driver and passenger. Then browse around the Shops of Bal Harbour and look at ridiculously overpriced merch.

Selfishly it doesn't hurt to express safety concern to hotel / car rental and see if they throw in any freebies. If nothing else you want to express it and maybe they beef up security.

Hollywood is just like most areas in South Florida and maybe even all of Florida. You are almost always in safer and better areas when you are on the beach or the bay/Intracoastal canal. The farther inland you venture you could be getting into rougher neighborhoods. In Miami-Dade and Broward a good general dividing line might be US1/Biscayne Blvd. you want to be between Biscayne Blvd and the Atlantic Ocean if at all possible. Of course there are always exceptions - the guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is way west of Biscayne Blvd. on 441 in Hollywood.

I live in Miami and go to Hollywood on a regular basis. The boardwalk (or Broadwalk as they call it) is a lot of fun. It is over 2 miles long and the beach is beautiful along this stretch. Bonnie & Read's Toucan Hideaway is one of my favorite places on the boardwalk. Great atmosphere, awesome British style fish & chips, and an incredible view of the ocean. You can't miss it - it is an older, charming building completely painted in a turquoise color.
