We are doing a cruise that stops in Salerno. We are scheduled to be there 7 AM - 6 PM.

My goal is to get to Positano for the day. Unfortunately, the ships excursion there are for a half day, and I'd really like to get to Positano and stay as long as we can.

Questions:

1) Any experience with the ferries? There are plenty of options if I was going this month; however, our trip is late October, and there is only one schedule that doesn't have a return time that works. Any chance the ferry schedules just aren't set this far out? If so, this would be a no brainer. I'm concerned that it's off season, though, and that's not going to be an option.

2) Since I can make the outgoing ferry easily, and think that would be fun anyway, any experience with one way trips from Positano to Salerno? Private cars are a little more than was hoping to spend, but it may be an option. Would there be a day of option? Could I just wing it and be OK or should I book something ahead of time?

3) There IS an Isle of Capri option that is all day from Salerno, provided by the cruise. I prefer Positano to Capri, but talk me out of that, I'm all ears.. I hear great things about both, but just seems Positano gets the nod, and Capri might be a little too touristy?

we had a great time in Capri. Rented a private boat to cruise us around the island. Some of the prettiest water/views I've ever seen.

Then we took the little funicular to the top of the island and ate at an amazing Italian spot, followed by some of the best gelato I ever had (both in italics below)

Definitely touristy, but most everything is and you can't beat the views. If you're looking for something more off the beaten path, I heard Anacapri has less tourists but we only had the afternoon to explore.

Have a friend from Rome and these were her recs for both. I didn't do Positano but did follow her recs most everywhere else and she never steered us wrong:

I wish I could help, but I just had the chopper come pick me up on my yacht and fly me over.
