I was booking flights (Chicago <--> Fort Lauderdale) for Christmas/New Years this year and prices seemed high ($1000/person).

I am going to wait to see if they go down. Are airline flight prices expected to go up or down over the next months?

I thought airfare would be back down by now with people getting their "revenge travel" done but there is so much money sloshing around I think it may take a severe recession to get things closer to normal.

ETA: If you are traveling over the holidays you might as well book now.

Where are you seeing $1000? I just looked on google flights and the cheapest option was $627. If you come back on 1/3 the cheapest flight is $449.

Book all flights when you have your trip locked in then monitor it for a price drop. Planes are stuffed, routes being cut, prices aren't going down.

united.com
expedia.com

All show $1000 for those dates. The flight also needs to be non-stop. Only heathens fly with stops on domestic flights.

It's more complex than that, tons of flights never came back and that's a big part of the issue too. A recession isn't going to fix that.

Really you complain about price but insist on non-stop.

American Airlines shows a nonstop flight for $685 returning 1/2. If you come back on 1/3, its $560 nonstop with American Airlines. Look on google flights, not expedia.

You're welcome, I just saved you $440

Google flights is great, although I exclusively fly United for most part. Ive just been backing off the price with miles lately on a few trips. United is killing us on Mexico…so good use of miles + $ to lower the overall price.

another hack I've been using with good success; book the cheapest flight of the day (or day before or after)

If and inevitably when that itinerary changes, you can swap to the flight you really want without paying the increase in fare.

But, you have to be prepared to actually take the flight you book, but I've done this 3-4 times in the last ~2 years, and it always gets changed so I can swap.

I read somewhere that they are changing the rules to cut down on this loophole.

Flying in mid September to Canada. Any chance prices improve or just bite the bullet now?

Speaking of high airline prices, we are flying from Houston to Rio in mid July for 6 days... very high price for the ticket.

I looked just now, and it is about $500 cheaper. If I call and ***** out United will they credit me the difference or should I just cancel my tickets and rebook?

Just cancel and rebook, not sure why you'd need to ***** out anyone. If you'd like, you can call and they can do the same thing over the phone. I'd suggest waiting to ***** them out, though, as that tends to make people less likely to help you.

Cancelled my original flight and rebooked at the new cost.

I was able to also use more points towards the overall cost then I anticipated as I had already received the points from my original booking already from a month+ ago. Hope it doesnt flush out in the end and have them ask me for money/points once I get the actual credit from my cancellation....
