Was thinking about driving over with the wife for a couple nights at the newly remodeled Tremont hotel. Have a couple drinks at the rooftop bar.

I just don't hear much about the Galveston situation lately, one way or another. Tks

We were there two years ago. It's mostly still pretty nice in most areas. We did an Airbnb near UT medical school. Very nice. A lot of the homes in that area have really been fixed up. The only thing about Galveston that disappoints me now is that Gaidos has really gone downhill. Will not go back to that restaurant.

It is the same as it has been for a long time. Stay at the Tremont, go to the bars and restaurants on the Strand and 21st/post Office. You will have a great time. Like NOLA, don't wander too far off the beaten path and you are safe. Rudy and Pacos is still great. Saltwater grill is great as well.

Ate at the new restaurant Sugar and Rye last week. Enjoyed it thoroughly, but get reservations because it fills up fast.

Was in Galveston this past Sunday for the Battleship Texas tour. Drove and had lunch on the beach at Gaido's and drove around the Strand. Seemed pretty normal.

I went to TAMUG in the early 2000s, it was sketchy back then in certain parts of town (I had the pleasure of using public transportation for a year). Can't imagine it got any, especially after Ike.

Haven't really been back except once to do lunch once in 2010.

Galveston is Galveston. There are some great little restaurants and bars, including some real hidden gems.

Say what you want about Galveston but as a Houstonian, I feel lucky to have it so close. I love it.

With that said, yes: The Galveston Walmart is the wildest retail space in the Southwestern United States.

Have lived in the Houston area nearly 20 years. We've gone to Galveston 5-6 times. It just never crosses my mind.

If you in Galveston, check out the Press Box at 2401 Postoffice. Food and burgers are solid. Lunch specials during the week. Good place to watch a game. Plenty of street parking in that area.

Also, La Estacion for breakfast and breakfast burritos which is right in that area as well.
