We have a cruise booked with a stop in Costa Maya, Mexico. I've been to the other 2 ports many times, but never to this one. Has anyone been there and have any recommendations while we're there? We typically try to avoid the more touristy areas if possible. Thanks.

We took the bus to the chocchoben aztec ruins. Think about 50 miles and was an interesting historical site. They drive like crazy there and the driver and tour guide on our bus were killed about a week after we left in a head on bus wreck.

Last time we went there wasn't much there. It was a super poor little town. Cool vibe but a lot of military and not much development. Maybe it's been developed since?

Right at the port there are restaurants, bars, shops, a pool & entertainment. We took a cab over to what I would call a boardwalk area in town. We hung out on the beach all day at the Krazy Lobster. Free & we just ordered food/drinks.

We went over Christmas 2021 and did these ruins. It was enjoyable. It didn't seem like there was much else to do there. It is a pretty tiny port.

Went last June 2022.

This was by far the smallest port on our stop. We did the Ruins tour which was about an hour there and an hour back. A total of 6 hours all together. Be sure to sleep on the bus ride to/back from the port.

The ruins were cool but you cannot climb on them as you used to in the past. My boys (11 & 9) enjoyed the tour however it is a pretty slow paced tour based on your group. It was pretty humid so bring plenty of water. Watch out for those monkeys as they were pooping all over the tourist on our way back to the buses, which again my boys found funny.

I'll be honest, when we got back inside the port the best time I had was sitting at the outdoor pool drinking beer under the shade of a ton of palm trees while my boys splashed around in the pool. They had a live DJ who was playing plenty of new and old music. There were innertubes to float on in this big salt water pool. The pool was just enough to get your body cooled off and then hang out on the sand bar areas. Plenty of seating around the pool.

The food was good and authentic but a bit over priced per taco due to being in a tourist spot. It was a cruise port that appears to be recently built and still growing. There were in the process of trying to open a water park there which you could see from the ship but we never heard why it never opened. Outside the gate, there were quite a few bars/places to eat, but we didn't have time to venture out.

Per some of the locals no one actually lives in Costa Maya, they just work there at this made up city in Mexico.

The town is Mahahual & it is about 1 mile away from the port.
