Just booked this itinerary for Nov 28 through Dec 6. Flying into Salzburg then working our way north via train. Anyone been this time of year? We will clearly hit all the big markets but was wondering if there is anything else we should be looking to do this time of year.

We were in Nuremberg closer to Christmas but the markets there were really good. If you have time, consider a side trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The market there is good and the old town walls still surround the medieval buildings. One of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany- it didn't get bombed in WW2.

Beautiful time of year for traveling. The Christkindlmarkts in Germany and Austria are fantastic. Nuremberg (I've not yet visited during Advent) has arguably the best in Germany. I've been to several in Munich (several throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs). The same for Vienna and Graz.

Be prepared to drink lots of gluewein.

We stayed two nights at a B&B in Rothenburg. After the tourists leave at 1600 it's a nice little town. Their Crime & Punishment museum is entertaining.

I agree traveling to smaller towns/villages. I do so outside of Munich, and it was amazing. The celebrations there are generally more intimate and thus, may have a bigger impact than the ones you experience in the larger cities.

We did Vienna and Prague. Enjoyed Vienna much more. Prague has become way too crowded is more of a party vibe.

We are going to try this one in Berchtesgaden; stunning views of the Alps and 25 minutes from Salzburg
