Haven't found an answer to this after looking quite a bit. Hoping someone might have some experience. I'm precheck and will be traveling with my son in a couple of months. He'll be 14 at the time and has autism. I'm wondering if he can come through precheck with me or if I have to go through the normal security line. He's traveled with me before, but when he was much younger and he was able to go through with me, but I think after they are past 13 that ability goes away. Is that correct?

If you have TSA pre, his boarding pass will have it, too. Yours extends to him until he turns 18 when you are traveling together.

This! One of my favorite things about it. I would double check that your boarding pass shows precheck before you get up there. I just flew with three kids and, despite my info being correct from the beginning, my boarding pass did not show precheck and it was kinda a pain with three kids. They were nice about it but I've got one kid who doesn't like surprises or stress.

one slight qualifier, which you're probably aware of...i believe he has to be on the same record locator/ticket

Entire family is on the same. He's the only minor though. I'm wanting him to come through precheck with me while everyone else goes through normal line

This isn't entirely true.

12 and under is always included. But they can randomly get excluded from 13-17.

I'd get him his own tsa precheck.

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/do-children-need-apply

"Family members ages 12 and under traveling with an eligible parent or guardian with a TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass can join them in the TSA PreCheck lanes without applying. Children between the ages of 13 and 17 who will be traveling on the same reservation as an enrolled parent or guardian may also access the TSA PreCheck lanes, provided the children have the TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass. Children 13 to 17 may be randomly excluded from receiving TSA PreCheck on their boarding pass. In these cases, they must go through standard security screening."

Interesting. We just traveled at Christmas. My BF and I both have TSA pre. His two kids under 18 that traveled with us had it on their BPs too. The 18 year old did not.

I wonder what the point of the random exclusion is.

Last time we traveled my 12 year old had it (she was on my pnr) but my 18 year old son didn't (he was on his dads pnr). They told us it drops off at 18.

Yeah, I knew that. But I thought it always transferred if the kids are under 18. But according to that post above mine it doesn't have to.

Traveled last month with my four kids.

16, 10, and 8 year old all went through precheck under mine.

18 year old went through regular.

I 100% endorse getting Pre check. Besides the normal locations, they are now doing "pop up" enrollment centers.

For instance they are going to have a truck in the parking lot of the Amarillo Airport from March 13-23 to do the interview.

Check the link below to see an enrollment location near you.

It's all approved by TSA, so why should folks in Amarillo drive to DFW or ABQ to get precheck?

wouldn't Lubbock be much closer?

I'm not saying don't take advantage of that. I'm saying, a van in the parking lot 'sounds' total sketch.

Lubbock didn't use to be an option. When we got it, it was DFW or ABQ

It is sketch. There is a place in The Woodlands that does it now. Address seems legit. I signed my son up and he went to the address and it redirected him to a Drury Inn. He went to a conference room there and there was a grumpy Karen watching Netflix and begrudgingly taking payment and processing the paperwork. Barely even looked up from her phone. She didn't give him any kind of documentation, receipt, or information. But a few days later we logged into his TSA account and it said payment had been processed his traveler number was there.

Federal govt at its finest.

Non tsa is going to take you what a few more minutes? Why not just go though normal security together. Seems easier than getting him his precheck.

My 14 year old just went though normal security on his own and flew by himself with no issues. He is adhd and dyslexic and managed it fine.

I never said I was buying him his own precheck. But if I can take him through with me it's a whole lot easier and less stressful on him. And good for your son. My son also has those conditions as well as a host of others.

Just went through security at HOU. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but I'm pretty sure there was a dad arguing with a TSA agent about why his <18 son (who was with him) didn't get TSA pre. The agent was trying to explain they have no control over it, and the dad kept saying "But he's always gotten it automatically" or something to that effect. So I guess it really isn't guaranteed.

Well if he doesn't get it, he doesn't get it. We will manage. Was just hoping to eliminate as much stress as possible. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

can't speak for all airports, but I fly out of austin all the time. any time i've seen anyone have an issue in the TSA pre-check line, they don't make them go to the back of the regular check. They just send them over to regular screening instead of the pre-check screening. They sometimes will direct them over to a non-TSA pre check agent, but again, they go straight over, not through the line. I'd try to go through with him regardless.
