We take a 4 night trip somewhere in the US each summer and looking for ideas, we have done most of Colorado.

Requirements....
1. Does not get over 85 degrees
2.Southwest needs to fly into an airport within 4 hour drive.
3. Two kids under the age of 8
4. Enjoy hiking, water activities, fishing, and trains

This. We went to Maine last July and it was amazing. Weather was absolutely perfect. SW flies to Portland.

New hampshire/maine border. SW into boston or Portland, stay in Portsmouth or Dover NH, or York Maine. About an hour from Portland Maine, and an hour and a half from Boston. Amtrak and Cj busses (which are super-nice) runs from Dover to boston for day trips and red sox games. I parked my car in dover and took the train for cheaper than the gas and parking to and from boston. You have mount washington and the cog railroad to the summit, lots of hiking in the area, the Kangamangus highway that cuts through white mountain national park with some hiking and gorgeous views, whale watching out of granite state park- i went on the morning boat and we saw 8 different humpbacks, apple and berry picking might be starting that time of year. The boston science museum and aquarium are pretty cool and very interactive if your kids are into that. This was 2021 so ymmv.

Highest average temperature in August for Highlands, NC is 76 degrees. TONS of waterfalls, rafting, hiking, etc. not too far away. Fly into Atlanta or into Greenville SC.

I do a beat the heat type vacation each year. I plan on either Banff area or upper Idaho area this year . Both are fantastic and Idaho is still sort of unknown

Doing Lake Tahoe with an 8 and 11 yo for this very reason. I said "we are going somewhere where I'm not sweating my ass off for a week" I've been several times, the kids and husband have not.
