Best Airline Dallas to Cancun? Thoughts on Frontier?

We have a wedding in Cancun in May and I am looking at tickets on kayak. Frontier is far and away the least expensive, but I have only flown Frontier once, and it wasn't my best experience as we showed up an hour and half before the flight, and they told us we could get on the plane but our bags couldn't. Ended up driving from Dallas to Aspen that day instead. Anyway, reading online that the issue with Frontier is they are notoriously late, and they usually only have one or two flights going to and from a destination a day. Since this is a wedding and we are paying for an expensive resort, the idea of being delayed a day isn't a great one, but I also don't relish the idea of paying an extra $600+ to fly American. So give me honest opinions and reviews on Frontier. Is it as bad as it seems?

Frontier sucks. Only tried to fly them twice and they cancelled both flights at the last minute. I had to make last minute changes both times to a different airline.

Why not SWA?

I always choose whoever has the best departure and arrival times for a non stop flight. Especially to a place like Cancun airport, where it is likely you'll have at least an hour drive to your hotel.

ETA- See if Sun Country is flying from DFW for your dates. I've gotten some good deals to Cancun airport with them a few times in the past.

Never get these " destination " weddings. Always causes financial grief for some of the people wanting to go. I'm sure everyone is like yay that will be awesome let's do it face to face then when they start adding up the cost they don't say anything but have the bill to stress about.

Yes I'm old fashioned and I'll go yell at a cloud and tell people get off my lawn now.

You're asking b/c you know Frontier sucks.
Just book the direct flights on AA and find another area to save money for the trip.

SWA was $500 more than AA and $1,000 more than Frontier. I know I just need to do AA but was hoping someone would say Frontier has gotten their s*** together and isn't as bad any more or something. But alas.

And AOA, I am with you for the most part but this is one we are actually looking forward to, and we are basically treating it as our honeymoon since we got married at Thanksgiving. Should be a good group of people at a bad ass resort, and we got the nicest room in the wedding block pricing. Should be a good time.

Say what?

Hotel zone is as little as 5-6 miles up to max 15 miles from the airport.
We just got back from Westin Lagunamar, all the way up by LA isla, and it was under 20 minutes, 12 miles.

I've done Frontier several times.. maybe 5-6 round trips.
never any more of an issue than any other airline.

The only major problem you may have is if it's canceled or you miss your flight, they only have 1-2 a day, unlike united, SW or AA which probably have 5-6.

Don't arrive day of the wedding, or even the day before if the day of flight is not really early.

I've saved thousands using frontier when it makes sense. Flew my family of 4 to FL and back one time for roughly $400, from Denver. Easily a grand saved on that one trip alone.

I think that's the idea.. it weeds out 75% of your guests that you feel obligated to invite but wouldn't miss them if they weren't there lol.

Exactly why my brother and his wife did it.

A lot of people say they are going to Cancun, when in reality they are going to a resort an hour away somewhere else in Riviera Maya, not actually in the Cancun hotel zone. That is what I was referring to.

Southwest does not fly direct (no customs at DAL) if that matters.. I think that your only direct options are AA and Spirit from DFW.

I would never tell someone I'm going to cancun if I was going to Tulum or Playa del carmen. thats like saying you're going to Miami but actually going to west palm beach.

Neither would I. But, I've been told that enough times over the years that I've lost count. Usually from.people who don't travel much. So, they probably don't know any better.

Did not know this. That makes more sense now.

HouseDivided. We flew home from Cancun today. The checkin lines for Frontier were rows deep full of people. Looked awful.
SWA wait less than 10 mins. AA is in a different terminal.

do they not have self check in kiosks?

With united, at DEN, it's been self check in for awhile. Print your tags, put them on yourself (or get help with assistants roaming around) then just bring your bags to counter, which is list a weighin, so it doesn't take anytime
And no line really forms.

Following up on this: Is Sun Country Air decent? Looks like they do fly there for our trip TO Cancun, but not back. Would save us about $400-$500 just for that one way flight but do not want to run into Spirit or Frontier issues.

Frontier isn't that bad. Main issues are the limited number of flights available and they nickel and dime the crap out of you. Nowhere near the fiasco that spirit is though.

If you do this at least you should arrive for the wedding issues maybe on way back

I've used them a few times to Cancun. Mostly without incident but once where I literally sat at DFW from 6 AM to 8 PM and was finally told to come back tomorrow and I'd be on the first flight out. Lost an entire day of what was only a 4 day trip. Every other flight of theirs went out that day but ours.

I'm pretty much AA for life at this point.

Yeah I just bit the bullet and did AA. Don't want to miss the wedding or the time at the resort that we paid for. Sucks but it is what it is. Appreciate the insight on this thread.

Good thing about AA on that route is that they have at least 7-8 direct flights a day so if something goes wrong there are more options to get back on track.
