For give me as I am not a gifted writer like some on here.

My wife and I met a few friends in Mexico for some R&R. Background: my wife and I have been to EPM x2, Excellence Punta Cana, an Iberostar, etc. So, we have a good feel for All inclusives both in service and quality of food and drinks.

So anyway we looked at EPM for this but the rates were high and I heard they were finally doing some updating. A friend of ours is travel agent and gave us Atelier as an option. It looked very nice and what we wanted.

She got us upgrades to Inspira which is essentially Excellence Club. Private concierge and check in. Upgraded liquor in the rooms. Private pool and beach areas.

First things first, my wife and I were on the plane with one of the other couples. We left Houston fairly early in the morning getting to the hotel right at lunch. Supposed to have a cocktail waiting (sparkling wine like Excellence), but my wife and I were not offered anything.

We were escorted to the Inspira check in once they realized that was on our reservation. My friends were escorted another direction given the wine and then 10 minutes later brought into Inspira.

As we are checking in, the concierge speaks decent but not great English. No problem my wife is Venezuelan.

So, lucky for us, our room is ready. Awesome. Our friends room is not quite ready. But, they will call as soon as it is. Should be no more than 45 minutes to an hour.

Our travel agent had been calling the resort all week trying to get us reservations for Maria Dolores which is their "signature" restaurant. She finally was able to get a hold of someone that said they were no longer taking reservations prior to arrival because of too many people canceling later and this restaurant is open to people not staying at the resort. "The Inspira concierge will take care of them as soon as they arrive."

We ask the concierge about reservations and she shows us the app. We start looking at the restaurant time availability and everything is like 75% booked for the next 3 nights. Our stay is 4 nights. The concierge tells us there is nothing we can do. But, that we should book some stuff and come back at 9 am the next morning to book Maria Dolores. Ok.

So far the attitude and general level of service is not up to Excellence. Anyway lets head to our room. Get taken to our room which turns out is very nice, and I would say a level above EPM. We did the swim up suite which turned out very nice.

The 4 of us decide to grab lunch at Suspiro which is the outdoor dining near the main pool. The lunch was excellent to the point that we were telling our friends I hope the rest is like this because this is probably the best meal we have had at an AI. (it was not to be)

As for our friends, they never got a call or a message through the app. they finally went back to concierge at around 3:30 only for the lady to say oh yes its been ready for awhile. Thanks appreciate that.

Our other friends were coming from Oregon. They got delayed in Denver, so did not arrive until dinner time. Only to find out that the resort gave away their room, and moved them to another side of the property which was not close to us.

That's the start.

More to come.

Been there 4 times, most recently November of this year. It was by far our worst experience, to the point that we are on the fence about going back.

Love the rooms. The rooftop ones are fantastic. Got an incredible deal the year they opened on the oceanfront master. Probably best trip we've ever had.

Love the Inspira bar / pool. A pic we took from there four years ago is still the background on my computer. Get the tamarind margarita with tajin on the rim. Game changer.

Dining used to be much easier. This last trip with the new app / reservation system was over the top frustrating. To the point I think we had one dinner where we got our first choice restaurant. If you're not there for 7 nights you're pretty much screwed anymore.

Service this last trip was the worst we've experienced. I think they've got new crews post COVID that are still learning. Overall it was a mixed bag - some really great and some really lacking.

We did their sales pitch this last time. Their long game is for Inspira to be members only. With Inspira no longer available we're out. As they start to really fill up the service is taking a hit. I hate it because they were our first pick when it came to Cancun for a few years.

Thanks for the review of Atelier!

It helps so much for all future travelers and my clients.

I've been hearing the same rumblings about Inspira club and it's making it difficult to book and find the right room for clients. Sad to also hear that service has declined.

this is pretty much what experience. crap service. a terrible app system for dining.

when we checked in the Inspira concierge had told us to book Maria Dolores come back at 9am the next day. that's when the reservations open.

so, the next day, my wife and I get there at 8:45 and are hanging around. at 9, we are the first people to talk to her. she proceeds to look on the computer and go sorry there's nothing. we are like what are you talking about, and her response is people outside of the resort probably booked it online. you should try opentable or another app. wait what? of course, there is nothing on the app.

after we go out to the beach, and we sit on the Inspira side you know for the superior service. let's just say we walked over and got most of our own drinks. generally, the best way to get great service at an AI is to find a spot you like and give a good tip right out of the gate. the servers will keep coming you back to you the whole stay.

i don't know if they didn't have enough employees or what. but, it was slow, slow, slow.

the one upside is we had the whole group down there and we are talking about the whole check in Inspira crap show. one of the Atelier employees comes over and asks what is wrong. We tell him we are just disappointed in the dinner reservation issues. he says he is going to help us. thanks Daniel!

we had 3 couples. Maria Dolores only has like 2 tables that can seat more than 4. so, Daniel gets us 2 tables right next to each other for an early dinner. hey great. thanks.

we enjoy a few of the places. the sushi place was actually pretty good. the asian fusion place Takeshi was really subpar.

as mentioned the rooms, were very nice except that the food cart and the "upgraded beverages for Inspira members" were only free the first time. if you ate your kitkat and wanted another, it was a charge. that was definitely a first compared to every other place we have been to.

my friends were about 6 doors down from us and weren't so lucky. there are a lot of weddings at this hotel. i mean a lot. many of the receptions take place at the outdoor dining Suspiro which my friends were 2 doors down from late at night a couple of times the resort banged some sort of gong multiple times to i don't signal the next event of the wedding or what. it was pretty annoying for them.

the Inspira rooftop pool is pretty great as mentioned.

so, Maria Dolores dining experience. again, i'd like reiterate there were no reservations available, and there was absolutely no way for the 6 of us to sit together. but, we are "right next to each other". our dinner is early. 6:15 ok. fine no big deal. well, for the first 30 minutes there weren't any other diners. the tables that were next to each other were more catty-corner and across the main walking aisle making conversation between us moot.

they absolutely would not push the tables together or let us sit at one of the 2 large tables because they were reserved. (no one showed up to either table).

so, how was the food. i would say the chef spent the entirety of his planning making something visually nice. the food was often weird to downright terrible either due to lack of seasoning or poorly paired flavors. it was so poor that i told my wife that if i was someone that came outside of the resort and had to pay for this. i would walk out.

it was arguably the worst meal we had including the times we had one of those crappy burgers on the beach. our friends pretty much said the same about their food.

all in all, i would advise anyone from going here. its simply too much money for the lack of service and the poor food.

Thanks for the review. I almost went there a couple of years ago and chose another resort instead. I'm glad I did. Curious, what were the 3-4 resorts you were looking at before you chose this one?

I've been to the Atelier 6 times and always find a lot more to like than dislike. It's a beautiful hotel with an incredible unique design. The food is always very good and I feel like the ambience and service is superb. I don't book Inspira because theres not much value with it. Great place to relax and feel like your in a beach resort paradise.

Bumping this. Did Atelier have a fun atmosphere? Music at the pool or is it geared more to relax?
Anyone done cheapo Paradisus Cancun?

Just know Paradisus is a HUGE timeshare resort. I won't even quote it. If someone specifically asks I'll provide pricing but just know that going in. Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite resort chains have timeshares, but Paradisus is really pushy.

Thank you for this in-depth review. In the travel agent world I continue to hear this exact type of feedback. I appreciate your honesty as I can for sure pass along to my clients.

Wife and I are Huge Finest fans. We've been on the fence about trying Atlier due to how pricey Finest is getting next door. However, we've never had a single bad meal, bad service, or bad day at all. Last June, we had no problem having dinner with our group of friends, all 12 always seated together, no problems. Wouls love to try a different spot, but the consistency, and amazing service is probably what will keep us going to FPM.
