Wife and I are going in August. We've planned a trip to Mount Jungfreau and a chocolate making class. Anyone else been and if so, what else should we look at doing? Thanks in advance

For starters, stay in Lauterbrunnen vs. the town of Interlaken, or one of the small towns overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. Get Rick Steves' book on Switzerland for the best advice on what to see and do. Here are several links on what to see and do that I used to do the same thing you are planning.

Stay in Switzerland as long as you can. We were there more than 2 weeks and felt we just scratched the surface, and there was no slack in our schedule. Get a Swiss Rail pass if economically feasible vs. renting a car. Go to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. Make your room reservations sooner rather than later.

Regardless, you will enjoy the trip.

I agree with jp70: do not stay in Interlaken. Stay in one of the mountain towns, like Wengen or Murren (Lauterbrunnen and Grindewald are also options).

You only want to do the Jungfraujoch excursion on a day when the weather is suitable (no low clouds). Mornings are your best bet. In August, you will need to reserve your seat on the train--most of the year, it's not necessary, but that's peak time.

How long will you be there?

These are both good recommendations. Mrren, Wengen, and Lauterbrnnen

are really better places to stay. What would be unforgettable would be a cool

hike in the mountains? When are you planning to come?

Did a week in Switzerland in May. Stayed in Lauterbrunnen the entire time and made day trips using Swiss Pass. Went to Lucern, Bern, and Gruyere (Cailler chocolate factory). Loved Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Grindlewald, and Murren. Hike to Murren is beautiful. Interlaken is OK and a train hub (about 25 minutes from Lauterbrunnen). Boat ride on lakes around Interlaken was nice and free with Swiss Pass. Weather did not cooperate for Jungfrau or the Schilthorn. Early morning is typically better.

Thanks everyone for the recs. SwissAg, we'll be there from August 9-16. We're also looking at maybe doing some canyoning and water rafting. We love outdoors and water. Saw an ATV tour that looked nice as well. No matter what we end up doing, we know it will be a great time

A week in Wengen is great, particularly if you get the 8 day Swiss Rail Pass. Most rail would be covered, and you'd get a 50% discount on lifts, and 25% discount on the Jungfraujoch. In all likelihood, you're going to have some days where the weather doesn't cooperate, so you want to spend as long as possible in the mountains, and take daytrips on the other days. With the 8 day pass, you would have maximum flexibility--get a bad weather (low cloud) day, and you can head to Bern, the lakes (Thun and Brienz), the Ballenberg open air musuem, or Lucerne as a daytrip. As far as rafting, I didn't make it over there, but the Aare River gorge near Meiringen might present some opportunities.

Have you looked into Zermatt? It is very beautiful.

The Matterhorn is an experience that you won't forget.

Try raclette and fondue while here!

Stay as high up as you can ... our favorites have been Gimmelwald and Murren.

You can spend days hiking around those two towns, but make sure and take the gondola back down to Lauterbrunnen and hike the valley as well.

The last time we went to Switzerland we did some paragliding from Murren down to the valley. That was pretty amazing ...

I don't remember who we flew with, but Tim at the Mittaghorn in Gimmelwald set it up for us

How easy are the (relatively) close distance things without a car? Like if you wanted to find a grocery store or something like that.
